Car to be at auction 3/26

    auctions.hampsonauctions.com/auction/lot/53-1973-jaguar-e-type-series-iii-v12-ro ...

    Auction description:

    1973 Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 Roadster

    Estimate - No Reserve

Hampson Auctions - Tattenhall, UK, 8 March, 2026

    Lot 55

Home Market example, manual transmission, accompanied by what could be considered the ultimate cherished registration number

    Registration – 5 JAG

    Chassis – UD1S22826BW

    M.O.T. – Exempt

    Odometer – 82,000

Chassis UD1S22826BW is a UK home market example finished in metallic silver with black hood and black leather interior, a colour combination that suits the model’s flowing lines admirably. The cabin presents in pleasingly original style, complete with Smiths instrumentation, rocker switch centre console and wood rimmed steering wheel, all combining to create the unmistakable ambience of a 1970s Jaguar sports car. The vendor informs us that the car has covered some 82,000 miles and has been in current ownership for over 16 years. A motor check shows just one former keeper prior to the vendor, an impressive record of continuity for a car now over half a century old. As a historic vehicle it is, of course, M.O.T. exempt.

The Series III brought significant developments over its six cylinder predecessors. Wider arches, a broader track and uprated brakes complemented the new V12 powerplant, transforming the car into a refined yet immensely capable high speed tourer. With 272bhp on tap and a soundtrack unique to Jaguar’s twelve cylinder engine, the open two seater offered performance to rival contemporary exotics while retaining the civility expected of the marque. Production of the Series III ran from 1971 to 1974, marking the final chapter of this seminal model’s original lineage.

Perhaps most striking of all is the cherished registration number ‘5 JAG’, a plate that needs little explanation and one that elevates the car’s presence still further. Registrations of this calibre are seldom encountered and represent a significant asset in their own right.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
