Lot #261873

This 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series III roadster is a Canadian-market example that was manufactured on May 18, 1973, and purchased by the current owner in 1975. It participated in Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) Concours events in the 1980s and 1990s, and was relocated to Arizona prior to 2013. The car is finished in silver over dark blue upholstery, and power comes from a 5.3-liter V12 that underwent a Stage 1 rebuild by Team CJ Works of Austin, Texas, in 2020. Equipment includes a four-speed manual transmission, an aluminum radiator, quad side-draft Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, a dark blue soft top, a removable hardtop trimmed in black vinyl, and an AM/FM radio. This Series III E-Type is now offered on dealer consignment with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Trace Certificate, factory literature, a spare parts collection, spare wheels, tools, service records, JCNA judging sheets and awards, and a clean Arizona title.

The car was delivered from the factory in silver, and the selling dealer tells us that it was repainted in the 1980s. The dark blue soft top was replaced under current ownership, and a removable hardtop trimmed in black vinyl is included in the sale. Additional details include uncovered headlights, RoW-spec bumpers, and a forward-hinged louvered hood. Paint cracks and areas of corrosion are visible.

The 15″ wire-spoke wheels are secured with knock-off spinners and are mounted with Dunlop radial tires. A set of four chrome-finished steel wheels is included in the sale. The Series III E-Type was factory equipped with power steering, and stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes with inboard-mounted rear rotors. The rear brakes were overhauled in 2020.

The cabin houses bucket seats that were retrimmed in dark blue upholstery under current ownership, and they are joined by color-coordinated door panels and replacement carpets. Appointments include a push-button AM/FM radio, an analog clock, rocker switches for vehicle functions, a height-adjustable rear-view mirror, and Jaguar-branded rubber floor mats.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline. An analog clock along with auxiliary gauges for voltage, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer is said to have rolled over, and it shows 5,600 miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 5.3-liter V12 features quad side-draft Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, silver-painted air cleaners, and bright rain shields. It underwent a Stage 1 engine build by Team CJ Works between 2019 and 2020, with work that included the installation of replacement camshafts and forged pistons as well as porting and polishing the cylinder heads. An aluminum radiator was also installed at that time. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox that was rebuilt at the same time as the engine and reinstalled along with a billet steel flywheel. Invoices from the 2019-2020 service are included.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists the factory colors along with the chassis, body, engine, and gearbox numbers.

The included removable hardtop has wear on the black vinyl finish, and the headliner is loose.

A collection of spare parts and tools is included in the sale.

The Arizona title has a “Not Actual” mileage notation.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
