Car to be at auction 1/15

    www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1961-jaguar-e-type-series-i-3-8-litre-roadster-2/

    1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8-Litre Roadster

    Lot 32

    Estimate: $350,000 - $425,000

    Chassis: 875272

Numbered 875272, this XKE is the 272nd left-hand-drive roadster produced. Accompanied by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT) Certificate, 875272 was factory-finished in Carmen Red with black smooth-grain upholstery and a matching convertible top. Research shows that the E-Type was a Bay Area California vehicle for its entire existence. First owned by Courtney Graham, founder of the Plantronics technology company, the exotic red E-Type was an executive's gift to himself. About five years later, 875272 was sold to another tech executive Douglas Pung. Nearly 20 years later, renowned early E-Type collector Mark Miller purchased the 1961 Jaguar from Mr. Pung, then showing about 50,000 miles, and placed it in storage until 1998. At that time, the mothballed E-Type was purchased by Lee Smith of Palo Alto.

In October 1998, the Jaguar specialists at Dave Ferguson's Images Auto Body in Campbell, California, were entrusted with the body and paint restoration of Mr. Smith's E-Type. This work was completed by mid-1999, thereafter, the XKE's body was properly waxed, covered, and stored indoors for the next 15 years awaiting completion. In early 2014, Mr. Smith sold the car to the consignor when a concours-level, no-expense-spared restoration of the complete car was undertaken again by Images Auto Body. Virtually every nut, bolt, and fastener was fastidiously restored. The work included rebuilding its 3.8-litre engine and mechanical components, whose stampings correspond to the JDHT Certificate. As offered, this professionally restored, early-production E-Type is accompanied by a completely restored hard top, original tool roll, and correct bottle jack. Other fascinating items include the Jaguar's history compiled by the prior owner, photographs, and California registration cards from the 1970s. Resplendent in its factory-specified colors and freshly restored, this outside-latch E-Type Jaguar is among the very finest examples of its legendary breed.

Chassis number 875272 was built on 21 July 1961. It left the factory finished in Carmen Red with a black interior and black convertible top. It exhibits the desirable early design features including outside bonnet latches, flat floors, and welded louvres. It was imported via Jaguar Cars of New York and is documented to have spent all its life in the warmer climes of the West Coast of the United States, having been delivered new to a customer in San Jose, California. The second owner, also residing in San Jose, bought the Jaguar in the mid-1960s and would hold onto it for nearly 20 years. In 1984, the E-Type was taken to European Motorsports Ltd, a Jaguar specialist in the Bay Area, for restoration. The garage closed for business while the car was undergoing restoration, it was subsequently moved to a workshop in Los Gatos, California. At that point, the E-Type was sold to Jaguar collector Mark Miller, and would go into storage, where it would remain until it was sold again.

In October 1998, the new owner had the car’s body and paintwork restored with Dave Ferguson of Images Auto Body in Campbell, California. The preliminary restoration work, documented by photos that will be offered in the sale of the car, was completed in 1999, after which the E-Type returned to storage. In 2014, Images Auto Body completed the nut-and-bolt restoration that would cost nearly $160,000.

Shown in its original shade of Carmen Red over Black with a Black convertible top, this E-Type exhibits numbers-matching chassis, engine, and body, as documented by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate accompanying the car. The Jaguar is presented alongside a restored hardtop in matching red and a tool roll that includes a Shelley jack and knock-off hammer.

Sold for an unbelievably low price of US$257,000 at RM Sotherby Auctions at Monterey on August 13, 2021. Someone got themselves an incredible bargain! Another albeit earlier car in the OBL Series 875023 needing full resto sold on bring a trailer a couple of months ago for $220,000. Enjoy your wonderful piece of Jaguar history!
