Seller's description:
Lot #40
Jack Lemmon
1969 Jaguar E-Type 2+2
Estimate $40,000 - $60,000
An original 1969 Jaguar E-Type 2+2 that was personally owned and driven by Jack Lemmon.
This Jaguar features a 4.2 liter XK I6 engine mated to a three-speed automatic transmission producing 246 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. The exterior is finished in a silver-tone and has been repainted, while the interior is a striking red leather. This E-Type features wire wheels, an air conditioning system, and a wood grain sports steering wheel.
Sometime in the early 1970s, Jack Lemmon sold the Jaguar to the animator Leo Salkin, who created the animated version of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner's 2000 Year Old Man, and who was the model for the animated character Mr. Magoo, based on a caricature of him by Oscar Winning Animated Short UPA Director, John Hubley. Salkin was also known for the Siamese cat sequence in the Disney film Lady and the Tramp (Walt Disney Productions, 1955). The Jaguar remained with Salkin until the early 1990s. It has been with its current owner since leaving Salkin.
Production numbers for Series 2 Jaguar E-Types indicate that only 5,326 2+2's were built between 1968 and 1971.
Mileage: Under 71,500
V.I.N.: J691R40597BW
Accompanied by an original letter from Jack Lemmon, authenticating the vehicle as well as ephemera relating to the previous owner, Leo Salkin.

Lot #235204
This 1969 Jaguar XKE Series II 2+2 was owned by The Odd Couple, The Apartment, and Glengarry Glen Ross star Jack Lemmon and was purchased by the seller in 1994. It is finished in silver over maroon leather and is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six linked with a three-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes a louvered clamshell hood, four-wheel disc brakes, 15″ wire wheels, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a Heuer Super Autavia dash timer, a Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio, and air conditioning. Service in 2025 included overhauling the dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and replacing the fuel pump, brake master cylinder, front brake calipers, ignition components, and cooling system hoses. This XKE 2+2 is now offered with service records and a California title in the seller’s name.
The car was refinished in silver in approximately 1998, at which time dents were repaired and body filler was removed. Exterior equipment includes sealed-beam open headlights, a driver-side mirror, wraparound chrome bumpers, bright trim, a louvered clamshell hood, and dual exhaust outlets. Hood bump stops were installed in 2025. The seller notes that the headlights do not work, and the hood requires adjustment.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by three-eared lobed knock-offs and are mounted with 195/75 Bridgestone SF-408 tires, while an older Michelin tire is mounted on the spare. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. Work in 2025 included installing braided steel front brake lines, bleeding the brakes, and replacing the top brake master cylinder, front brake calipers, and vacuum hoses.
The 2+2 cabin features seating surfaces upholstered in maroon leather along with a color-coordinated center console, door panels, and carpets. Interior appointments include a locking glovebox, air conditioning, a Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio, and a Heuer Super Autavia dash timer. A four-speed manual-style shift knob has been fitted to the automatic transmission shifter stalk. The radio was repaired in 2025, and the rearview mirror was re-installed. The seller notes that the air conditioning and the analog clock do not work.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline, and gauges for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 71k miles, and total mileage is unknown. The speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, and instrument panel lights do not work.
The 4.2-liter inline-six is equipped with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and was rated at 246 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque when new. Service in 2025 included overhauling the carburetors, flushing the cooling system, repairing the exhaust system, adjusting the ignition timing, and replacing the following components:
Spark plugs and wires
Distributor points, condenser, cap, and rotor
Fuel pump, fuel lines, and fuel filter
Oil pressure switch
The oil was changed in 2025. The seller reports that the engine backfires when turned off.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential.
The seller corresponded with Mr. Lemmon about the car in 1995, and a photo of the letter are included.
The California title is a duplicate.
