This 1970 Jaguar XKE Series II coupe is said to have been delivered new to a dealership in Los Angeles, California, and remained with its original owner until the current owner’s acquisition in 2024 following a claimed 45 years in storage. A subsequent refurbishment performed at a cost of over $68k involved a repaint in white, an interior re-trim in black leather, an engine rebuild, and more as detailed below. The car is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six fitted with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, while shifting is through a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. It rides on 15″ knock-off wire wheels and is further equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. Inside, a wood-rimmed steering wheel is accompanied by a heater, air conditioning, and a Phillips radio. Now showing 58k miles, this XKE coupe is offered by the seller on behalf of the owner at no reserve with an owner’s manual, service records, spare parts, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.

The car underwent a color change to silver prior to the current owner’s acquisition and was subsequently repainted in its current white finish. Additional work at that time involved replacing the glass and associated rubber seals as well as rebuilding the windshield wiper motor. Exterior details include a louvered clamshell hood, a driver-side mirror, wraparound chrome bumpers, and dual exhaust outlets.

The 15″ knock-off wire wheels are secured by three-eared knock-offs and are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Suspension and brake work completed as part of the refurbishment included disassembling and inspecting the rear shocks as well as rebuilding the brake calipers and replacing the master cylinder, booster, fluid reservoirs, hoses, pads, and inboard-mounted rear rotors.

The bucket seats were fitted with replacement cushions and reupholstered in black leather as part of the refurbishment. Additional work involved re-trimming the center console, replacing the dash, refurbishing the heating system, and converting the air conditioning system to utilize R134a refrigerant. Further interior details include a Phillips AM/FM radio, a locking glovebox, and front shoulder belts.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel is paired with a wood shift knob. The wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline as well as a centrally mounted analog clock flanked by gauges for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 58k miles, approximately 300 of which were added under current ownership.

The 4.2-liter inline-six was factory equipped with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and rated at 246 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque when new. Work performed as part of the engine rebuild completed in the course of the refurbishment project is noted to have included the following:

Resurfacing the cylinder head and replacing the valve guides

Honing the cylinders and replacing the piston rings

Inspecting the crankshaft and replacing the bearings

Rebuilding the carburetors

Installing a programmable 123ignition distributor

Replacing the ignition wires

Cleaning the starter

Refinishing the radiator

Refinishing the cooling fans and replacing the sender

Replacing the coolant hoses

Rebuilding the water pump

Blueprinting the oil pump

Refurbishing the fuel tank and replacing the pump

Performing a timing adjustment

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential and 3.50:1 gearing. The rear axle cradle mounts and torque arm bushings were replaced at the time of the refurbishment along with various exhaust system mounts.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
