Lot #227945

This 1967 Jaguar XKE Series I coupe is said to have been acquired by its long-term owner in 1973 and remained with the same family in California since. Following a period of storage, chassis 1E33544 underwent just under $27k of reconditioning work at Sierra Classic Sportscar of Meadow Vista, California, from 2021 to 2025 as well as a repaint in 2024. Finished in Opalescent Golden Sand over black leather, the car is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six equipped with triple SU carburetors that is linked with a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. It rides on 15″ wire-spoke wheels coupled with power-assisted disc brakes and has been fitted with Spax Performance rear shocks as well as a Bell stainless-steel exhaust system. Further details include enclosed headlights, triple windshield wipers, and a Panasonic AM/FM radio as well as a Smiths heater and gauges. Now showing 68k miles, this XKE Series I coupe is offered by Sierra Classic Sportscar—a BaT Local Partner—with service records and a duplicate California title in the name of the family’s trust.

Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights and taillights mounted above the chrome rear bumpers. The seller tells us that this example was repainted in Opalescent Golden Sand circa 2024 and been fitted with replacement exterior seals in 2025. A louvered clamshell hood, a driver-side mirror, triple windshield wipers, wraparound chrome bumpers, and a side-hinged rear hatch are further details.

The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with Bridgestone SF-371 tires measuring 185/70. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. Spax Performance rear shocks were added circa 1990, while work in 2021 involved servicing the rack-and-pinion steering as well as overhauling the brakes.

The bucket seats wear replacement black leather covers and are accompanied by a color-coordinated dash, center console, door panels, and carpets. Further interior appointments include a tan headliner and black lap belts along with a Panasonic AM/FM radio and a Smiths heater. The Hardura under-dash trim is missing.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The tachometer was repaired in 2025, and the five-digit odometer now shows 68k miles.

The 4.2-liter inline-six featured triple SU carburetors from the factory and was rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque when new. Work in 2021 by Sierra Classic Sportscar involved the following:

Rebuilding the carburetors

Changing the freeze plugs

Servicing the ignition system

Replacing the spark plugs and ignition wires

Refurbishing the radiator and changing associated hoses

Removing and refurbishing the fuel tank, rail, and lines

Installing a Bell stainless-steel exhaust system

Further updates in the fall of 2025 are said to have included performing electrical system repairs and changing various fluids.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The clutch hydraulics were serviced in 2021.

Chassis number 1E33544 is shown on the plate above. The sequence is used as the VIN on the title prepended by “J67”.

The seller states that the car is registered as Planned Non-Operation in the state of California.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
