This 1966 Jaguar XKE coupe was modified in the style of an E-Type Lightweight and converted for rally use under previous ownership. Dubbed Silver Thunder, the car has completed the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge and the Lima to Cape Horn. It was acquired by the seller in 2017 out of California and it was outfitted in summer 2020 with a Crosthwaite and Gardiner 3.8-liter inline-six utilizing triple Weber side-draft carburetors. Shifting is via a lightweight aluminum E-Type Fabs five-speed manual gearbox and a lightweight Crosthwaite and Gardiner limited-slip differential with 3.07:1 gearing. Finished in silver, the coupe features an aluminum hood, doors, and hatch, as well as a removable roof rack, a side-exit exhaust system, 16″ Braid Rally wheels, and adjustable suspension. Inside, a pair of Recaro seats trimmed in black leather are accompanied by Schroth Racing multi-point harnesses, a roll cage, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, Stilo intercom, Boss Bluetooth audio system, two rally computers, RundenMeister stopwatches, and a 25-gallon aluminum fuel cell. This XKE is now offered with spare wheels, an additional Moto-Lita steering wheel, dynamometer results, records, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The body is finished in silver with various graphics and is fitted with aluminum doors as well as an aluminum bonnet and rear hatch secured with external latches. The bumpers have been removed, while a side-exiting exhaust system with a perforated heat shield has been added. Further additions consist of mesh guards over the covered headlights and fog lamps, dual Tablot Berlin side mirrors, Rally Armor mud flaps, a Monza-style fuel filler, and an external kill switch.
A removable roof rack with auxiliary lighting is included in the sale.
Silver-finished 16″ Braid Rally wheels are mounted with 205/60 Michelin Defender tires, and a matching spare wheel is stored in the rear compartment. Two additional sets of spare Braid Rally wheels wrapped in Pirelli and Michelin rubber will accompany the car.
Braking is via four-wheel dimpled and grooved discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors, and four-piston finned lightweight front calipers are said to be installed along with Series II rear calipers. Further modifications include variable-assist electric power steering as well as brake cooling ducts, temperature sensors, an electric vacuum pump, and a Perma-Cool fan for the master cylinder.
Following the 2019 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, the mechanical systems were overhauled. The suspension has been modified with adjustable coilovers at each corner. Up front, a replacement reinforced space frame was reportedly sourced from E-Type Fabs. The cross member and upper wishbones have been gusseted and structurally reinforced, while the lower wishbones have protective shields. A larger anti-roll bar, uprated torsion bars, and polyurethane bushings are also equipped. Out back, the suspension cradle and lower wishbones have been reinforced.
The cabin has been outfitted with a pair of Recaro bucket seats trimmed in black leather, which extends to the dash, center console, and door panels. Schroth Racing multi-point harnesses are equipped for both occupants and attach at the roll cage. The car is fitted with a Boss Bluetooth audio system with rear-mounted speakers, and a Stilo intercom complete with a pair of headphones. Additional appointments include twin Monit G-200 rally computers, a Garmin GPS, a pair of RundenMeister stopwatches, and dual fire extinguishers.
The leather-wrapped Moto-Lita steering wheel has a Jaguar-branded horn button, and an additional Moto-Lita steering wheel of a different diameter is included in the sale to accommodate different driving events. The wheel fronts a Smiths 260-km/h speedometer and an Autometer 8k-rpm tachometer. A mixed set of instrumentation has been installed in the center stack ahead of the shifter. The five-digit odometer shows 13k kilometers (~8k miles), which represents the distance traveled since the Crosthwaite and Gardiner 3.8-liter was installed in 2020. Total chassis mileage is unknown.
The 3.8-liter inline-six was built in 2020 by Crosthwaite and Gardiner of East Sussex, England, and it incorporates a wide-angle cylinder head, an aluminum block, and wet-sump lubrication. Induction is via triple Weber 45 DCOE carburetors with an ITG air filter, while cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator, an electric fan, and a lightweight expansion tank. The fuel system is said to utilize a trunk-mounted 25-gallon aluminum fuel cell, a triple fuel pump set-up, and twin fuel filters. The seller tells us that PDF files of 150+ individual pages of invoices for major purchases and many additional receipts for smaller components are included in the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a lightweight aluminum E-Type Fabs five-speed manual gearbox and a lightweight Crosthwaite and Gardiner differential equipped with 3.07:1 gearing housed within an aluminum case. A lightweight flywheel with a rally-style roller thrust bearing clutch assembly are said to be equipped, and custom skid plates protect the underside.
