1965 Jaguar E-Type 'Series 1' 4.2-Litre Roadster with Hardtop
Chassis no. 1E1298
*Sold new in the Republic of Ireland
*One private owner from new
*Genuine circa 54,000 miles recorded
*Registered in the Republic of Ireland

The 298th right-hand drive 4.2-litre roadster off the production line (the chassis number sequence commenced with '1001'), this 'Series 1' E-Type was sold new in the Republic of Ireland and was delivered finished in Opalescent Silver Blue with dark blue interior trim and blue hood. Its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate shows that the E-Type was sold via distributor Frank Cavey in Dublin, and the private vendor advises us that he bought the car new from Murphy & Gunn, a dealership that had registered the car and used it as a demonstrator (see registration document). The dealer's sticker - 'Murphy & Gunn, another satisfied customer' - is still in the rear window. Re-sprayed some 30 years ago, this one-owner car has covered circa 54,000 miles from new and is presented in generally very good condition. A rare opportunity to acquire an unmolested, low-mileage, one-owner example of the iconic Jaguar E-Type in - arguably - its most desirable form.

This particular right-hand drive Roadster, chassis number 1E1298, is understood to be the 298th 4.2-litre example produced and was supplied new in the Republic of Ireland. Finished from the factory in Opalescent Silver Blue with a dark blue interior and matching hood, the car was distributed via Frank Cavey in Dublin and subsequently sold through Murphy & Gunn, who are believed to have initially registered the car as a demonstrator. Pleasingly, the supplying dealer’s period rear window sticker remains in place.

Remarkably, the E-Type remained with its original owner for the majority of its life before being acquired by our vendor, only its second owner, in 2017. Since then, it has formed part of a carefully curated private Collection and has been maintained with a clear emphasis on preservation and usability. During current ownership, the car has been fully resprayed in January 2021 by Grange Moor Coachworks of Wakefield, presenting today in a finish that complements its original colour scheme. Importantly, all body panels are understood to be original, supporting the car’s integrity and appeal.

Further improvements include the fitment of a new convertible hood supplied by BAS International, along with a tonneau cover, ensuring the car remains well suited to open-top touring. Mechanical maintenance has been carried out by the collection’s in-house mechanic, with the car reportedly kept in good running order throughout its time with the current owner.

Having covered circa 54,000 miles from new, this example presents as an honest and well-cared-for E-Type, benefitting from long-term ownership and considered upkeep rather than extensive modification. Its history is supported by a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, owner’s handbook, lubrication chart and original Republic of Ireland 'buff' registration book, supporting its provenance and early life and confirming its build details and original specification.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
