Lot #222326

This 1966 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was sold new by Sports Cars Inc of Fairborn, Ohio, in May 1966, and the car has undergone various refurbishment work since the 1980s. The vehicle remained with owners in Ohio until it was relocated to Maryland in 2004, and it has been with owners on New York’s Long Island since 2011 until being acquired by the selling dealer in mid-2025. Powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential, the car is finished in green over black leather. Equipment includes a black convertible top, a top boot, enclosed headlights, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, triple SU carburetors, an auxiliary electric cooling fan, stainless-steel headers, a stainless exhaust system, a Kenwood CD stereo, a wood shift knob, and lap belts. This XKE roadster is now offered with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, 1966 sales paperwork, manufacturer’s literature, service records dating back to the 1980s, handwritten mileage and maintenance logs from the 1980s and ’90s, tire-changing tools, and New York registration.

Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights and taillights mounted above the chrome rear bumpers. This example was finished from the factory in Dark Green and was repainted in Woodland Pearl (6R1) in 2005, and the passenger door was repainted to repair a paint chip in 2013. The louvered clamshell hood anchors dual side mirrors. Additional equipment includes a black soft top, a black top boot, enclosed headlights, triple windshield wipers, bright trim, wraparound chrome bumpers, and dual exhaust outlets.

Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with 205/75 BFGoodrich Silvertown Radial red-line tires. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. The brake master cylinder was rebuilt in 2018.

The cabin features bucket seats that were reupholstered in black leather and their diaphragms and cushions replaced in 2005. The wood shift knob was installed in 2018. Interior appointments include color-coordinated door panels, center console, carpeting, and dashboard trim as well as a Kenwood CD stereo, center-stack speakers, lap belts, a sliding rearview mirror, a passenger-side grab handle, a heater, and a Lucas controller for hazard lights.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located at the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 38k miles, approximately 100 of which were added by the selling dealer.

The 4.2-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque. The cylinder head was machined in 2011. A thermostatically controlled electric cooling fan was adapted in 2019.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The clutch cylinders were replaced in 2013. Stainless-steel headers and a stainless exhaust system were installed in 2018.

More than 200 pages of records from 1987 through 2019 are presented in the gallery, as are handwritten mileage and maintenance logs from the 1980s and 1990s.

May 1966 sales paperwork from Sports Cars Inc shows that this car cost a total of $6,195.98 and that a 1963 Jaguar XKE roadster was received on trade-in for a credit of $2,829.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers, and it also documents that the car was built on March 21, 1966, and was dispatched to New York on April 5.

The vehicle is being sold on its New York registration, which serves as the ownership document in New York.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
