Above 2024 sale description:
1964 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2 Roadster
The Silver Bullets & Red Arrows Collection
23/06/2024
5,970 miles (indicated)RHDmanual
Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
Engine Size 4.2L Inline-Six
Exterior Red
Interior Black
This Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster is a beautiful classic sports car, benefiting from a prior restoration by specialist XK Engineering that included a new Martin Robey body shell.
A matching-numbers car retaining its original engine and gearbox; it is powered by a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated inline-six, fed by triple SU carburettors, producing up to 265bhp, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
Combining the ‘pure’ looks of the S1 3.8 with improved mechanicals, it is understood that just 863 examples of the E-Type Series 1 4.2 Roadster were built in right-hand-drive, making it a particularly rare variant; with this car being an early production example built in December 1964 and first registered on 5 January 1965.
This E-Type is an original UK-delivered car with just five registered keepers showing on the V5C in total.
It has been in the seller’s collection since 2007.
The car was entered in the inaugural Gold Coast Motor Festival held in Hong Kong in 2016 and won its class, reflecting the impressive condition.
The odometer shows 5,970 miles, which is believed to be the distance covered since the specialist restoration.
During the car’s restoration, the original registration plate of ‘S 774’ was identified, reissued, and reunited with the car.
Equipment and features
While originally delivered in cream over a blue interior, this E-Type Roadster is now finished in the classic combination of red over a black leather interior, complemented by a black soft top roof, and chrome bumpers front and rear.
It rides on 15-inch wire wheels fitted with Avon Radial Steel tyres.
Inside, there is a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, central control panel with the familiar bank of toggle switches, a retro-style modern Becker Mexico radio, and the full complement of Smiths instrument gauges.
The car has been fitted with a Kenlowe fan.
Accompanying this E-Type is a box of invoices dating back to 2007, a photographic record of the restoration by XK Engineering when it received a new Martin Robey body shell, and a fitted tool kit.
The registration ‘S 774’ is included in the sale, and is the original mark issued to the car in 1964.
Condition
Specific notes from the seller include: The car retains the original engine, gearbox and IRS axle, so is a matching-numbers car. During the full restoration by XK Engineering, the interior was refurbished by Jaguar coachtrimming specialist Suffolk & Turley.
The most recent MOT test was on 21 June 2016 at an indicated 4,776 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories.
It is understood to be exempt from mandatory MOT testing on the basis of age.
