If I had to hazard a guess, it was probably restored some time ago. At some point, all the 4.2 stuff would have seemed whiz-bangy and the original interior tired and dated. Maybe the owner needed a new interior and engine rebuild in '72 and his local wrecking yard had a totalled '69 with otherwise good interior and engine for $200?

Some good pictures in this auction, Clearly as has been mentioned above its an odd car. It has all the features of a '68 except the engine, the rest of the engine compartment is '68 or S2, including the gas strut to hold the bonnet. Wheels are later style, the hood/top is from a later car (1 missing bow), as is the obvious dash and interior. I see nothing to suggest this car is a '63 except for the VIN, motor and bonnet. It would appear that either the car is a '63 that nearly met with death and was brought back from a later donor or the reverse. Its a pretty car but certainly a mixed bag of parts.

The convertible E Type 4.2 litre that we offer was purchased in 2009 by current owner, a professional who specializes in cars of this category in the region of Bordeaux. car sold 111,532 in France. I can not believe anyone would buy this car after reading the above description, then inspecting the car. Something is wrong here. Either the entire car was rebuilt with a 4.2 doner car or a 3.8 vin was placed on this car early in its life. How about a Heritage certificate to explain it. I feel bad for the new owner.
