Lot #240070
This 1963 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was originally delivered to the US and was imported to France in the early 1990s. It was acquired by the current owner in 2020 and was restored over the next three years, including a repaint, reupholstered interior, and rebuilds of the powertrain, brakes, and suspension. The car is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Finished in Opalescent Silver Blue over Dark Blue leather, the car is equipped with a blue soft top, enclosed headlights, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, dual side mirrors, triple windshield wipers, and a Motorola AM radio. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered in France on dealer consignment with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, restoration photos and records, a car cover, and French registration.
This example left the factory in Opalescent Golden Sand with a matching soft top and during the aforementioned refurbishment, it was stripped to bare metal, mounted to a rotisserie, and repainted in Opalescent Silver Blue following the completion of body work. Chrome and exterior trim were re-plated as necessary and the rubber weatherstripping was renewed. A replacement blue soft top was also installed.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with Michelin XVS tires measuring 185/80. The brake system was overhauled during the restoration, including rebuilding the inboard and outboard calipers and replacing the rotors, lines, hoses, and master cylinder. The steering rack was overhauled, and the front and rear suspension was rebuilt with Spax adjustable shocks along with new bushings, ball joints, and springs.
The cabin was reupholstered, including re-trimming the bucket seats in Dark Blue leather and replacing the carpets and door panels. Interior appointments include textured aluminum dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, a Motorola AM transistor radio, and a heater.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames overhauled Smiths instrumentation, including a 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer was reset to zero at the time of the restoration and now shows 1,700 kilometers (~1k miles).
The 3.8-liter inline-six was rebuilt during the restoration, with work that included reconditioning the replacement cylinder head and replacing the pistons and rings, timing components, bearings, and seals. The triple SU carburetors were also rebuilt, the radiator was re-cored, and the wiring harness refurbished. The seller also tells us that the starter, generator, fuel pump, water pump, and fuel tank were rebuilt or replaced as necessary.
The engine block stamp corresponds with the engine identification listed on the chassis plate and the Jaguar Heritage certificate shown below. The cylinder head is a replacement.
The Moss four-speed manual transmission was reportedly rebuilt with replacement synchros, bearings, and seals. A replacement clutch assembly was installed, the driveshaft and u-joints were serviced, and the differential was rebuilt. A stainless-steel exhaust system is fitted.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate shows factory colors and equipment and indicates that the car was dispatched to New York in the USA on March 7, 1963.
Photos taken during various stages of the restoration are included.
The vehicle is being sold on its French registration, which serves as an ownership document in France. The registration lists a VIN of “J63879076”, which adds the first letter of the marque and the model year as a prefix to the car number, “879076”.
