Car to be at auction 7/17
www.brightwells.com/classic-motoring/leominster-classic-vintage/leominster-class ...

Auction description:
Registration Date 1970
Make & Model Jaguar E-Type S2 4.2 Coupe
Colour Opalescent Blue
Registration Number TBA
Chassis No. 1R27815
Engine size 4,235 cc
Engine No. 7R11035-9
Documents Due to have a V5C and a new MOT; NOVA ref; mileage warranty docs; 2 x US Certificates of Title; invoices; handbook
Estimate £60,000 - £65,000

Built in March 1970 for the US market, this remarkable E-Type has effectively had just three American owners from new (two from the same family) and has only covered 13,000 miles in its 47 years to date, backed up by various documents on file.

It was first owned by Jim Cox of Colorado Springs who kept it for 17 years but barely used the car before selling it to F&R Import Ltd of Engleton, Colorado, with a written affidavit from a Notary Public dated 2nd January 1987 confirming the mileage as 881 at that date. They quickly sold it to a local gentleman, Karl Morgan, and carried out much work on his behalf including a full engine rebuild plus numerous other jobs with bills on file amounting to some $14,600.

Various other invoices chart routine servicing over the next 20 years (the mileage being stated as 10,925 on an invoice dated April 1995) including a new wiring harness and electrical system overhaul by Vintage Jag Works of Blackfoot, Idaho, in 2010 at a cost of $4,557. Another letter on file dated 2nd March 1989 confirms the mileage at that date to be 4,819.

At some point ownership transferred to Karl's son David, of Idaho Springs, from whom the vendor acquired the car last year with a written affidavit from David Morgan dated 21st July 2016 certifying that the odometer reading at that date of 12,990 miles was correct.

Since arriving in the UK, the car has been treated to a thorough going-over at ADR Engineering of Wokingham to sort out any niggles, including a full service, new front brake discs, various rubber mountings, seals, bushes and hoses plus a new battery (invoices on file). Starting easily and running nicely as we moved it around for these photos, it is due to have a fresh MOT in time for the sale and the vendor has applied for a V5C so it should also be UK registered and ready for a new owner to drive away.

With sparkling Opalescent Blue paint, good panel gaps and appearing very sound underneath, this 'matching numbers', ultra-low mileage S2, with just three private owners in its first 46 years, looks a snip at the sensible guide price suggested. Or you could join the queue to buy one of JLR's S1 cars being rebuilt in Coventry under the 'E-Type Reborn' programme with prices starting from £285,000. You do the maths...

Car to return to auction 11/17
online.handh.co.uk/m/lot-details/index/catalog/8/lot/14156/

Auction description:
The Imperial War Museum Duxford Motor Car Auction 15/11/2017
Lot 109
1970 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Coupe
Estimate: £60,000 - £70,000

- Warranted 13,000 miles from new in the hands of three American owners
- Power steering, four-speed manual transmission, Black leather upholstery
- Checked over by ADR Engineering of Wokingham since being imported to the UK

Finished in Opalescent Dark Blue with Black leather upholstery, this particular example - chassis P1R27815 - was supplied new to Jim Cox of Colorado Springs. Fitted with power steering and four-speed manual transmission, the Jaguar had covered just 881 miles by the time he sold it to F&R Import Ltd of Engleton, Colorado as an accompanying written affidavit from a Notary Public dated 2nd January 1987 confirms. Acquired by local enthusiast Karl Morgan thereafter, the E-Type returned to F&R for various works including a thorough engine overhaul with bills on file totalling some $14,600. Routinely serviced over the next twenty years (the mileage being stated as 10,925 on an invoice dated April 1995), the two-seater also benefited from the installation of a new wiring loom and general electrical refurbishment by Vintage Jag Works of Blackfoot in 2010 ($4,557). At some point ownership transferred to Karl's son David, of Idaho Springs, from whom the UK importer bought the car last year with a written affidavit certifying that its odometer reading of 12,990 miles was correct. Since arriving in the UK, the Jaguar has been checked over and treated to a full service, fresh battery, new front brake discs and rubber mountings, seals, bushes and hoses by ADR Engineering of Wokingham. Said to be in `very fine condition throughout', this highly original, `matching numbers', low mileage E-Type is worthy of close inspection.

Country United Kingdom

Highlights

• Ultra-low mileage

• Engine recommissioned

• Huge documentation file

• Heritage certificate present

The History

The original factory records show that this car was manufactured on 16th February 1970, and was dispatched to the British Leyland New York – USA Distributorship on the 13th of March in that year.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate confirms the numbers of the car at the time of manufacture, all of which bear out with the vehicle’s identification plate. The documented history of the car shows that EXZ 558 was initially purchased and owned by a gentleman from Colorado Springs, Colorado. That first owner put only 881 miles on the car during its first 17 years of life.

He then sold it on to an agent who traded in Eaglewood Colorado, on 25th June 1986; the transfer price being recorded as $5,775. The trader sold the car on to a Father and Son who initially resided at Littleton Colorado and then at Idaho Falls, Idaho. Between the Father and Son they owned the car for the next 29 years, covering an additional 12,109 miles during their ownership. The transfers between these parties are corroborated and validated by Official State Documentation issued at the time of transfer and duly notarised.

The final document to hand before the car left the USA shows a transfer in the value of $45,000 at 15th July 2016. Further verification of mileage comes by way of a written affidavit countersigned by the Public Notary.

There are in existence innumerable minor documents tracking various repair and maintenance works that have taken place over the car’s lifetime.

After arriving in the UK the car was sold as Lot No:90 by Brightwell Auctions at their July 2017 sale. The car achieved the distinction of being the top sales price for any car at that auction.

The Paperwork

All import documentation, VAT, Custom & Excise, HMRC and DVLC documents are in order and are included within the comprehensive history file, along with the UK issued V5C registration document. Some United States certificates continue to be held by DVLA Swansea however photocopies of these documents were taken before being lodged with that UK authority.

Documented mileage increments are as follows:-

16/02/1970 0 miles

24/01/1987 881 miles

14/09/1988 4,159 miles

02/03/1989 4,819 miles

17/03/1989 5,234 miles

04/04/1995 10,925 miles

20/07/2016 12,990 miles

26/06/2017 13,000 miles

01/10/2020 13,043 miles

Current 13,510 miles

Thus averaging approx. 258 miles each year of its life.

The car was MOT’d, with no noted advisories, on 26th June 2017 after its arrival into the UK. Now officially classed by the DVLA as an exempt historic vehicle EXZ 558 will therefore not be required to be MOT’d again in the future.

The file of paperwork to go with the car includes assorted detailed receipts and invoices for parts and work over 5 decades primarily in the USA and most recently the recommissioning work and part replacement here in the UK.

The Interior

The leather of the seats is in incredibly good condition despite its age. All seat seams and piping are in good order and there is no loss of resilience in the underlying foam formers. There is one small break in the leather of the passenger seat upright, other than that the seat leather is in top class and unblemished condition. The remainder of the interior trim is in good order with only minor items having been replaced over the years, however the vast majority of trim, is as fitted, when it left the factory. A non-standard radio-CD player has been fitted at some point and is functional.

The original steering wheel had suffered age deterioration and has been recently replaced with a period-correct, albeit slightly thicker hand-crafted steering wheel of the correct pattern.

All gauges are in situ and functional, except for the clock, the failure of which has not been investigated. The oil pressure gauge is non-standard having at some time been substituted for the original Smiths unit, it functions well and registers a perfect operating pressure.

All switches are functional with the obvious exception of the heated rear screen switch as this option is not fitted to the car.

Wheel-Spinner removal tool, jack and hammer are present with the car.

The Exterior

The body of the E-Type is very well presented, having benefited from a full respray sometime before June 2010, changing the colour from its original Signal Red to Opalescent Dark Blue. The quality of the work is such that even now at 11 years down the line, it still looks superb, however there is one small blemish on the left-hand side of the bonnet.

The correct chrome is all in place and in really tip-top condition. The panel fit is uniformly good throughout, and the doors close well but have been fitted with new rubber seals in recent times. The wire wheels are in outstanding condition, with the original locking spinners. The wheels are fitted with quality tyres. The spare tyre appears unused. The front right-hand indicator lens has a small crack, but otherwise all the lights are in good condition and work. The distinctive triple wipers are present and operational.

The Mechanics

As a consequence of the degree of infrequent use it was considered prudent to recommission the engine and in November 2019 a comprehensive re-commissioning programme was carried out at a cost of £3,000. As with other aspects of the car’s history this work is fully recorded in the comprehensive document file.

After the exchange of much correspondence the car was successfully registered with the DVLA on the 18th December 2019 with the retained private registration number EXZ 558, which remains with the car. The retained registration will be transferred with the car upon completion of sale.

Purely as a precaution the engine has undergone a full programme of recommissioning work since arriving here in the UK, extensive details of that work are contained in the document file that accompanies the car. The engine bay is well presented with no evidence of leaks. The engine starts well and runs smoothly and pulls strongly, idling evenly and showing correct oil pressure.

New oil, air & fuel filters have been fitted. There is visual evidence of front suspension elements having been recently overhauled or replaced. The braking system has benefitted from recent replacement of the front brake discs, master and slave cylinders and both brake fluid reservoirs. The clutch master and slave cylinders and the associated reservoir have similarly been replaced, as have the windscreen washer pump mechanism and bottle.

A new full-length stainless steel exhaust system has just been fitted to the car. The right-hand radiator cooling fan motor is noisy and has therefore been disconnected. A manual switch operating the left-hand radiator fan has now been fitted.
