This is a welded louver / flat floor car, currently missing the engine and with a '63 transmission. It's a heavy project car, to say the least and partially incomplete, but a good start to a restoration on a very rare, flat floor coupe.

The original engine and transmission have been located and reunited with the car.

    Engine:
In the car is a later E Type engine casting date 9-1-62 with the engine number ground off the block and the head and restamped to R1947-9. Being a later engine it doesn't have the correct early features that it should have.

    Gearbox:
Is a much later E Type gearbox EB8329JS as shown in the photo stamped into the gearbox casing. The number has been ground off the gearbox top and restamped EB1052JS.

    Body:
It is body number V1086 as per the body number tag attached to the body and as shown in the attached picture, not V1057 as per the ID plate. It's close but not the same.

    Chassis number:
The number stamped into the front frame is correct 885062 but the frame itself has had sections cut out of it and others welded into it so it is dubious.

So the car is body number V1057 (which is still a flat floor coupe) that has had the ID plate from 885062 riveted to it and possibly the section of the front frame bearing chassis number 885062 grafted into the front frame, then a slightly later engine fitted and a much later gearbox fitted.

I bought 885062 from USA. It has V1086 as body number which is different from the one in the tag, this does not worry me as "on many 1961-62 cars, the body number on this tag is slightly different from that found on the main ID plate." this quote was extracted from a book titled Jaguar E Type by Andreas Ditlev Claushager published by Herridge & Sons Ltd in 2011 page 153. So it was very normal that the body number was different.I can also confirm this from another 1961 E type that I had the opportunity to restore.

Regarding the chassis number I have personally sanded down the picture frame to bare metal - there were no joints or welds thus this is the original chassis. I have all the photos to prove this. The side frames and bonnet carriers were changed for safety reasons.

The car I bought car came with the original engine and gearbox dated 22/8/61 with all the early features including the three eared intake manifold.

The dates and the originality of the car were also confirmed from the wiper motor date and the date on the distributor. Other early features are the welded louvered bonnet, the flat dash, the flat floor, a different rear door latch, a hand made central console and many other features.
