Current bid $20,000 reserve not met, 1 bid, 6 days left in auction.

    Sellers description:
This is one of the last of the original 3.8 Series I E-type “Open Two Seaters”. It is an older restoration with recent mechanical rebuild. It was put in storage in 1979 until the late 1990s when the restoration began. All the body work, paint and most of the interior were done when I purchased it in February of 2000. I finished the interior including a new vinyl top and cloth top cover, and rebuilt the drive train with the objective of making it a great looking, reliable “driver” with an original look. In the last 3 years I have kept it clean, changed the oil and enjoyed driving it. It has been garage kept under a dust cover since I have owned it.

It is a matching numbers engine but it is not the original engine. The numbers (R5075-9) indicate a circa 1963 etype 3.8 engine. It was professionally rebuilt and upgraded. It includes (among normal rebuild items) new(not rebuilt) water pump, new cams, new timing chain, new 4.2 oil pump and tubing, re-sleeving, new pistons, new style connecting rod nuts(no cotter pins) and a modern composition head gasket. The new engine was installed in 2003, and has about 3000 miles on it since then.

The transmission is the newer “all synchromesh” 4 speed. The flywheel was turned and a new clutch plate and disc installed when the new engine was installed. The only thing done to the transmission was new seals installed. It works flawlessly. The mating of the transmission to the 3.8 is thru a 3.8 bell housing using the standard 3.8 starter. No external modifications or shims or starter modifications. It looks original and works great. The clutch master and slave cylinders were both rebuilt.

The IRS has been completely rebuilt. It is not original. It is from a series II with larger discs and calipers. It has a 46/13 (3.54) standard ratio. It bolted right in. I purchased the whole IRS from a local collector who had it rebuilt in England for a future project that never happened.

Before the reinstall of the engine I stripped and detailed the entire engine compartment. Removing everything (except the suspension), bead blasting everything forward of the firewall and repainting with 2 coats of PPG DP60LF blue epoxy primer and PPG DCC acrylic urethane matching paint. All parts were bead blasted and painted before being reinstalled. Most all fasteners were replaced with stainless steel fasteners. All new grommets and many new parts installed (see detail below). The aluminum parts (cam covers, manifold, carburetors, etc) were bead blasted but not highly polished. This gives a clean original look, but not a show look. I have included pictures of the install including a picture with the bonnet removed.

    Detail of work done
The term NEW used below means new since I have owned the car. Most of the described work was done in 2003 and 2004. The mileage on the car when purchased was approximately 46,000. It now has just 49,789 miles.

    Fuel System:
The fuel tank was removed and the inside taken down to bare metal and “Teflon” coated (Eastwood tank restoration system) to prevent any future corrosion. A new modern “in tank” fuel pump and new fuel gauge sender installed. It all still looks original in the boot. Carburetors rebuilt. The “choke” cable and all carb linkage work as they should. All new springs.

    Cooling System
New header tank. Original “Otter” switch. I have installed an automotive relay (similar to earlier models) to carry the fan motor current. The otter switch triggers the relay. This allows the otter switch to carry a small current and should last forever. Original radiator cleaned and repainted. All new Kevlar hoses and SS clamps. “CoolCat” fan blade and motor. Original “beanie” blade and motor have been restored to original look and function and is included. An overflow bottle has been added for functionality. It is easily removed for an original look. It required no modification. It is attached to the existing spot for a RHD clutch and brake reservoirs using existing mount points. It attaches to the overflow hose with a brass connector. To restore originality simply remove the bottle, remove 2 screws and disconnect the brass connector. The overflow bottle allows checking of fluid level without removing the expansion tank cap and allows expansion without losing any fluid. I have not removed the cap or added coolant in 4 years. The system runs between 70 and 85 deg C and never overheats.

    Heater
The heater box was bead blasted and repainted. Heater water pipes replaced with stainless steel pipes. The heater core was cleaned and is original. New seals were installed. A new heater control valve was installed. All cable controls work perfectly. The system actually heats pretty well. The fan makes a little noise in high. I have a new aftermarket motor but never installed it since it works fine in low. The new motor is included.

    Brakes
The rear brakes were part of the IRS rebuild. The front calipers(Dunlop) were re-sleeved in stainless by XKs and rebuilt. The front discs have a rock guard installed. Rock guards were not used until 1965. While not original they make sense for a driver. The 2 master cylinders are “Girling” and have been rebuilt. I believe Girling was original in 1964. The power booster was removed, cleaned, checked and reinstalled. The bellows is not cracked and holds vacuum as it should. All new brake disc pads. The braking system is better than new. The emergency brake works.

    Suspension
The rear springs and shocks are new as part of the IRS rebuild. The front shocks are new. The torsion bar and reaction plate are original and have been painted with POR15. The correct ride height has been retained. The upper ball joints are original with no play. The lowers have been replaced with modern sealed units (XJ6 type). New tie rod ends. New gaiters. Much of the suspension has been cleaned and painted with POR15. The wheels look original and are in good condition. Tires are over 10 years old, and although they have plenty of tread they should be replaced.

    Ignition and Electrical
The distributor and coil are original Lucas and work fine with new, original look spark plug wires. The system remains positive ground with a rebuilt generator. The voltage regulator is original Lucas and works fine. The electrical wiring is original but has been entirely rewrapped. New starter solenoid. The radio is a period AM/FM Panasonic and is switchable between positive and negative ground and works fine, but I doubt it is original to the car. The speakers are new (Blaupunkt). All lights, switches and gauges are original and work great, even the clock. The clock has the internal electronic upgrade by ”Jaguar Clock”.

    Miscellaneous
All new body rubber except the “boot” lid seal. I have not found a suitable replacement so I retained the original which doesn’t look to bad and it seals. No tool kit. The jack appears to be from an XJ6, but it does work. The dash and “crash pad” appear to be original. New exhaust system. K&N air filter. Original Parts and Service manuals included.

I replaced the steering wheel with a 15 inch chrome wheel. The original is included.

When I purchased the car it had no data plate. I purchased a new one and stamped in all the current numbers. It is not original, but is intended to give it an original look. I have installed under hood labels and decals but they may not be complete or entirely correct.

    Serial Numbers
    VIN: 881802
    Body: R8750
    Engine: R5075-9
    Transmission: EJ14633

    IMPORTANT
The paint is showing its age. It shines up nicely and looks good from 10 feet, but it has some nicks and scratches and “spidering” above the exhaust manifold on the bonnet, and on the boot lid. There was some plastic filler (Bondo) used in the body work. I have used a magnet and have identified about 4 square inches in front of each rear wheel, and under the battery.. Otherwise the rockers are solid. There may be some other small places that I am not aware of, but it is not extensive. There was some rust at the bottom of the boot and floors which has been repaired. Rust is never minor but this was a Northeast car until I brought it out West and I think it survived very well. All of the chrome exterior parts are to my knowledge original. Some of the chrome pieces show some pitting if you look up close. Again they shine up very nicely. There are a couple small pieces that show peeling and could be replaced or redone.

I consider this car to be a very reliable and a great looking, solid driver and I have described it to the best of my ability. However, with all pre-owned automobiles, especially classics, the condition is subjective, so I recommend that the potential buyer inspects as well as test drives the vehicle before finalizing purchase.

On inspection, I noticed the body tub is showing typical corrosion damage, inc. rear suspension mounts, which will require proper repair.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
