Chassis 879798 was supplied abroad in LHD when new and still retains her original engine - well in as much as the block is the same. As you'll see below and from the photos she has been appropriately modified to suit her new purpose. Finished in original primrose yellow with correct black leather seating the vision Brian had, was to create a lightweight in homage to the very famous and early version of John Coombes, known by its registration number of 4WPD.

Moreover they chose to make a facsimile of the earliest period of the cars racing history. Light and fast was a prerequisite, so too was, as safe as possible. There is the inevitable metal safety cage to cater for the latter and all the outer panel work except the tub are made of GRP to cater for the former (we can convert this to alloy for anyone desirous thereof). So famous is 4WPD, driven by the greats of the time that an autobiography has been written in more recent times by Phillip Porter.

Following on from his huge success with the Safety Devices business, Brian was looking for new challenges and set up Zealia Engineering, specifically to make his own Lightweight E Types – Approximately, 10 cars were built.

Each Zealia was unique, and such was the attention to detail taken over each example, the car we are advertising here took 3 years to complete.

1963 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8-Litre by Zealia Engineering - 508 KPF

One of just ten 3.8-litre Series I E-Types professionally built as 'fast-road' cars and evocatively presented in the style of the legendary Lightweight racers from the early 1960s.

Brian Wilkinson, the founder of Safety Devices and a gentleman with an unquestionable motor sport background, produced his first roll-over hoop in 1971 before founding Safety Devices in 1972 and subsequently Zealia Engineering some years later to develop his own Lightweight E-Type, one of which we offer here.

This is a rare Jaguar indeed being one of just ten limited edition Lightweight Zealia Engineering E-Types that were produced in fibreglass with a retained steel monocoque and were reminiscent of the 1960s Lightweight E-Types that were dominant when raced in period, particularly 4 WPD, the legendary John Coombs car. It's based on an original left-hand drive, 1963 3.8 litre Roadster finished in its original Primrose Yellow with a black interior now converted to right-hand drive and sporting a black removeable hardtop.

In terms of motivation, the original 3.8-litre engine was converted to dry sump competition specification, fuelled through triple 45 DCOE Weber carburettors with gases exiting through a period-correct tubular exhaust system all mated to a non-period 5-speed Getrag gearbox driving through a 33.1 Powerlok differential.

The front suspension is standard E-Type with Koni shock absorbers and an uprated anti-roll bar with braking courtesy of Willwood whilst the rear runs with a slightly wider track as per original lightweights with Series 2 callipers to aid braking. Wheels are peg-drive Dunlops with 3-eared spinners, again as the original racing E-Types.

Internally the competition theme continues with a larger transmission tunnel, lightweight seats and of course, a Safety Devices rear cage.

Eligible for hill climbs, sprints and other classic race series, this is an affordable E-Type that has endless potential, not only as a fast road car but also one that can be utilised for various forms of competition should that route be chosen by the next custodian.
