RM auction, Amelia Island, New York, 3/10/01 lot #53. Sports Car Market description:

A driver rather than a show car. Carried alternator and larger cooling capacity. Appeared to be a well-sorted, honest example. Sold at no reserve.

RM auction, Meadowbrook MI 7/31/1998 lot #435. Sports Car Market report reads:

"Chrome wire wheels. Poor door and hood fit, filler and cowl and rear of hood, rust bubbles in RR hood bottom, driver's carpet worn out, door handles loose, uneven door gaps. Auction preparation personified."

Car was sold at Amelia Island, Florida auction 3/05

Selling price $33k

The matching numbers example offered here is a handsome example of the British manufacturer’s commitment to excellence in engineering and design. The current owner purchased this car from our 2001 Amelia Island auction and has enjoyed over the last several years. The previous owner had also enjoyed the then 64,000 mile car as well, and in an effort to make it even more mechanically friendly he installed an alternator in place of the car’s original dynamo in addition to increasing the Jaguar’s cooling system capacity. These changes have permitted the E-Type to run better while allowing its owner to never worry about the car overheating.

The current vendor reports using the Jaguar only sparingly since purchasing the car and in remains in very good mechanical order and can be described as a driver. The paintwork and interior are understood to be in presentable order showing only some wear from usage. This smooth running example will undoubtedly be a reliable and sporting motor car that will provide its next owner with ease in ownership and maintenance throughout the year.

Ebay item 12/31/05

Current bid $22,300.00 (Reserve not met), 17 bids, 3 days left in auction. Car is located in Duncan, South Carolina.

Sellers description:
This 1963 Jaguar series one E Type convertible is a nice clean car. It runs and drives very good. The engine compartment is clean and free from excess oil. It doesn't have any squeaks or rattles. The body is straight and it looks nice. The car doesn't show any signs of ever being wrecked. The paint is OK, but not show quality. It is white with a dark red interior. The interior is nice and doesn't have any rips or tears. The top is new and the tires have very low miles on them. The car has an Alpine amplifier and six disc CD player installed in it. This installation was done very nicely and does not detract from the car in any way. The equipment is installed in the trunk. The original jack and tool pouch are with the car. If you want to own a series one E Type convertible that is a great driver, this is the car for you. It will be difficult to find a better "driver" example of this early Jaguar XKE, which is considered by many to be one of the prettiest cars ever built. This is the second time the car is being run on eBay.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
