Sports Car Market Magazine Auction report on what to be the same auction as reported above except it is reported to be in Rochester, Michigan, report reads "Rochester, MI • August 5, 2000 Auctioneer: Peter Bainbridge".

Aution report reads:
#213-1963 JAGUAR XKE Roadster. S/N 877793. 6-cyl. 3781cc. 265hp. Gray metallic/red leather. LHD. Odo: 13,274 miles. Floor- shift 4-speed manual. Bucket seats. Chrome wire wheels. Mileage claimed original. Two owners. Original spare, tool kit, bill of sale and all repair receipts. Seats cracked. Decent respray. Passenger door fit off at bottom. Very straight otherwise. A survivor. Cond: 2-. SOLD AT $58,080. Too bad about the respray, and wonder what happened to the passenger door. This was a lot of money for a car that really can't be driven as is (the seats were horrible). Wonder what the owner will find when they take the paint off?

Sellers description:
Michaels Motor cars is pleased to offer this completely Original Unrestored Concours condition Series I Jaguar Roadster. This car must be seen and driven to fully appreciate. The actual documented mileage is only 14,500. This E-Type has new leather seats, and new chrome wire wheels with Vredestein tires, (we have the original seats and wheels which go with the car.) The car was re-sprayed in the original Gray Metallic several years ago to a high standard. Everything else on this unique vehicle is as it left the Jaguar factory. Chrome, interior door panels, carpet, top, boot, all mechanicals, dash pad, are all original. Top and boot are showing patina. This is a matching serial numbers car, all drivetrain is original to the car.

The engine is factory correct with triple S.U. carbs with original air cleaner canister. Original Moss gearbox is fitted with non-synchro first gear. An Electric cooling fan has been added for additional cooling capacity. This car has always been maintained, and garage kept since new. We have copies of the original bill of sale, and the second owner copy of title. The car is now titled in Virginia by the third owner. This very special E-Type was last sold at an International auction and passed all tests regarding authenticity and original mileage. This Jaguar runs incredibly well, transmission shifts just like a Moss box with low mileage, Engine is very strong no smoke, quiet valve train. No suspension noises, tight steering response, positive brake feel with no vibrations. This is one of those cars that reminds us how these cars drove when new.

Car to be at auction 3/10

Auction description:
1963 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Litre Roadster
Lot# 70
Chassis No. 877793
Engine No. R6720-9
* A 15,000 Original Miles Example
* Exciting Color Combination
* Only Three Owners from New
* A Remarkably Original and Well-Preserved E-Type
On February 3, 1963, Dr. A J Majzoub purchased this E-Type new in Pontiac, Michigan, and it remained in his possession until his death 32 years later. It then passed through one interim owner before being purchased by its present owner in 2000. Over the 45 years that have elapsed, this remarkable Jaguar has covered less than 15,000 miles and it exhibits the hallmarks of a well-maintained, almost completely original car, both inside and out.

This E-Type has been driven only approximately 2,000 miles during the last decade and the owner has gone to great lengths to preserve its originality; he has even had a second set of seats made in order to preserve the wonderful hides on the original seats. The original canvas top and matching top boot – still showing factory chalk notation corresponding to the body number – are a testimony to the integrity of the car. The original wire wheels with whitewall tires still holding air have been a fixture on his garage wall throughout his ownership. Those tires, together with the spare seats and wheels, are included in the sale of this car. On the whole, this E-Type remains in outstanding, unspoiled condition. With the exception of a repaint in its original Opalescent Gunmetal color, it is largely unrestored and very presentable throughout. As many of these cars have been comprehensively restored, it is a rare treat to come across a car that has been so well preserved.

With its irreplaceable patina, the interior of this roadster is an immediate focal point. The leather exudes an honesty and charm which are seldom seen and the various interior finishes, including the doorsills and delicate aluminum dash fascia, appear beautifully undisturbed.

The engine compartment is also in a wonderfully original state, with chassis and engine number stampings appearing clear and bright and matching the chassis plate. In addition, the gold paint on the cylinder head, original fuel lines, cloth wiring loom and “hammertone” underhood paint finishes are nicely preserved.

The bodywork remains in lovely condition with the precise gaps and consistent panel fit which are rarely duplicated on restored E-Types, indicating that the car has never suffered an accident or unsympathetic bodywork.

This car has all of the attributes of a car that has never been disassembled. There is simply no substitute for a factory assembly in terms of retaining the original essence of an automobile’s character, both on the road and standing still. As more collectors seek out the best available original cars, low mileage examples such as the car offered here are quickly becoming difficult to find.

This Jaguar represents an opportunity to experience an early E-Type Roadster as they were, first hand. The texture, smell and mechanical character of this car provide a glimpse into the past and brilliantly illustrate why these cars were so revered in their day.

ABOUT THIS VEHICLE

Share This Vehicle
Though Jaguar produced the Series 1 E-Type between 1961and 1967, it was the original 3.8-litre model that captured the public's imagination and earned the "XKE" its now iconic status. Distinguished by their sporting character, sculpted bucket seats, and aluminum dashboard, the earliest E-Types were the darlings of the international show circuit, graced the covers of magazines, and even raced with success. That the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired a 1963 E-Type Roadster for its permanent collection speaks to the model's profound aesthetic and cultural significance.
Constructed on August 2, 1962, this striking E-Type was finished in Opalescent Silver Grey with red leather - arguably the most attractive color scheme offered for the elegant Series 1 Roadster. Dispatched through Jaguar Cars New York, the E-Type was delivered new to Automobile Import Company in Pontiac, Michigan.
On February 8, 1963, the E-Type was sold to its first owner, Dr. Ahmad J. Majzoub, a surgeon living in Lincoln Park, Michigan. Outfitted with whitewall tires and a dealer-installed Becker radio, the new Jaguar cost its first owner $6,000.15.
Driven minimally and otherwise stored during winter months, the E-Type remained in the hands of its original caretaker until his death in 1995. Following his passing, Dr. Majzoub's collection of 18 classic cars was dispersed and the E-Type, then showing 12,000 original miles, was sold to Jay Rutilli of River Forest, Illinois.
In fall 2000, Mr. Rutilli sold the E-Type to its third owner, a Virginia collector with an impressive stable of significant British sports cars. During his decade-long ownership, the Jaguar was driven sparingly and maintained by Grand Touring, Inc. of Laurel, Maryland.
In the care of its current owner, a knowledgeable Los Angeles collector, the Jaguar has been lovingly maintained and exercised on weekend outings, covering some 250 miles each year. A powerful testament to the qualities of a low-mileage, unrestored car, the consignor reports that this 50-year-old Jaguar is "a far better car than the 1967 Roadster I owned in 1970."
On a recent outing with a Gooding & Company specialist, the E-Type performed without fault and possessed the unmistakable feel of a well- maintained original. At the time of cataloging, the odometer displayed just 15,356 original miles.
The bodywork, refinished once in its original color, displays precise gaps, excellent panel fit, and no evidence of prior repair. Under the hood and boot, as well as in the doorjambs, the original paint survives in excellent condition. Both the cylinder head and block are the original, matching-numbers components and the body number (4410) is written in factory chalk on the firewall and on the inside of the boot cover.
Significantly, the interior, top, and boot cover are factory original and beautifully patinated. In an effort to preserve the original seats from further deterioration, they have been kept in storage and substituted with a set of matching "driving seats."
The consignor has gone to great lengths to ensure that the E-Type is authentically detailed, down to the proper Lucas battery, Dunlop tires, and a reproduction of the original Michigan registration.
The sale of this remarkable E-Type includes a complete tool roll, jack kit, owner's handbook, original sales brochure, serial-numbered Union key, and a JDHT Certificate. Additionally, the car is offered with an unrestored hardtop and both original seats, as well as its five original chrome wire wheels and Dunlop RS5 whitewall tires.
Beyond these important accessories, the E-Type is accompanied by much documentation, including the original bill of sale from Automobile Import Company, the British Standards Institution seat belt hangtag, an invoice from Detroit British car specialist Falvey Motor Sales dated July 11, 1963, along with a wealth of correspondence, ownership documents, and service records.
Having benefitted from the meticulous care of just four owners since 1963, this wonderfully original, low-mileage E-Type Roadster is a magnificent prize for the collector who has been searching for a truly outstanding example of Jaguar's finest sports car.
