1962 Jaguar series 1 3.8 E-type Roadster

This is an incredibly original and rust free early e-type roadster that just came out of 15 years of storage. I know it does not look too good in the photos,
but trust me when I say this is a very good example. It has been in California all of its life and there has never been any rust ... and I mean no rust, zero, nada. There is some body damage on the left top of the bonnet which should not be too difficult to hammer out. The paint seems to be the original, I would do the bonnet repairs and blend in the color instead of doing a complete repaint ... luckily white is relatively easy to blend. The windshield and drivers door glass were damaged during transportation and will need to be replaced. The interior is all original with the exception of the seat bottoms.
Original Blaupunkt radio. The carpeting is original and even the door panels. I would apply just a little dye to bring back the red color, and replace some of
the leather panels on the seats, but definitely the interior should not be replaced. Best of all the soft top is still the original and in not too bad condition ...
again, it would be a crime to replace it. The boot cover is in great shape for the age and still has the hand written body number (in chalk) in the underside.
I have read about these chalk marks in the restoration books but this is the first time I have even seen original markings in all my years of Jaguar ownership. Chrome is good and should clean up nicely, the exception are the wire wheels which are probably best to replace. All the boot side material and mat are very restorable with just some dye, the boot wood is included. The canister on the right side of the engine compartment is a period extra oil filter, instructions for this filter are included in the paperwork. You may choose to keep the filter or remove it.

The gas tank was removed in order to clean 15 years of old gasoline! under the gas tank is also rust free. The engine
starts right away (naturally, it is matching numbers) and has great oil pressure. I have driven the car about 5 miles and all the hydraulics work, clutch and
gearbox are good. The gearbox shifts nicer than most other 3.8 series 1 I have driven. Other than the normal service items (replace all fluids, etc) I think
mechanically the car will need very little.

Comes with ownership records dating back to 1964. I have requested the Jaguar Heritage Certificate which will document that the numbers and color
combination are indeed the original.

The car is perfect for a light restoration and to keep it as original as possible. I am advertising it "as is" for a few weeks in case someone wants to take on this project. I will ONLY sell it to someone that is willing to keep the car original! If you are looking to make it into another over-restored example ...
please look elsewhere. Original unmolested early series 1 e-types, in this type of condition, are extremely difficult to find. As they say .. a car is original only once. My wife thought I was completely crazy when I brought this car home. Somehow she could not understand why I was (am still am) glowing with excitement! I've owned and judged quite a few e-types, finding an unmolested 3.8 car is rare .... and yes, that gets me excited!

This is what I know the car needs:
- Left hand side of bonnet fixed ( I have a good used headlight chrome ring and the turn signal housing). The bumpers were not damaged.
- Spot paint the repaired bonnet area. There are multiple small dents in the doors, trunk lid, etc. I recommend using someone that specializes in fixing
dents.
- Replace windshield and driver's side door glass
- Replace some of the seat panels. New complete seat kits are available , but I would recommend keeping as much as the original as possible.
- Exhaust is rusty and has holes.
- Radiator is leaking (Update: on 3/18 I removed it and took it to the radiator shop)
- Generator light does not turn off (probably the mechanical voltage regulator needs to be cleaned)
- Re-install gas tank (already cleaned and sealed)
- Flush all fluids
- New wire wheels and tires
- Detail the engine (polish cam covers, carbs, porcelain exhaust manifolds, etc)

I estimate it will cost between $6,000 to $10,000 to make this car very presentable while still keeping it as one of the most original series 1 e-type
around. l assuming the new owner is willing to do some of the "elbow grease" work such as cleaning around the engine.

I still own this car as I use it to serve as a guide on a 1964 e-type for which I am doing a ground up restoration. The restoration of the 64 has reached the point where the 62 is no longer needed. I did complete the things which I listed the car needed back in 2005, and it is now a good driver. My objective was to refurbish the car without loosing its originality. It still retains its original soft top and most of its original interior. The factory wire wheels were soda blasted and came out beautiful. This is one of my all time favorite e-type .... and I've owned over 100!
