Lot #129099

This 1962 Jaguar XKE Series I Roadster is said to have spent time in California and Oregon, and it has reportedly remained in the possession of the same family since 1985. Power is provided by a 3.8-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission, and the car has been refinished in black over red leather upholstery. Equipment includes 15″ knock-off wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, triple SU carburetors, chrome bumpers, covered headlights, a black soft top and top boot, fender-mounted mirrors, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo. This Series I XKE is now offered on dealer consignment with tools and a clean Oregon title.

The car is finished in black and is said to have been repainted twice under current ownership. Exterior details include glass headlight covers, split chrome-finished bumpers, dual fender-mounted mirrors, a louvered hood, three windshield wipers, a black soft top and top boot, and dual center-exit exhaust outlets. There are rust holes in the trunk floor and rocker panels as well as blemishes and bubbles in the paint, pitting in the chrome trim, and wear and cracking in the soft top weatherstripping.

Replacement chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels feature two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with 185-series Pirelli Cinturato CA65 tires. A matching spare is stored under the trunk floor. Braking is handled by four-wheel disc brakes with inboard rear units.

The cabin houses low-back bucket seats trimmed in red leather that extends to the center stack, transmission tunnel, and door panels along with a contrasting black-trimmed dashboard and carpeting. Textured metal trim on the dashboard and center console is accompanied by a passenger grab handle, a vertically mounted rearview mirror, and an AM/FM cassette stereo. There is wear and pitting present on the interior metal trim.

The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with an inset clock, while mixed-brand readouts for water temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are centrally mounted in the dashboard. The steering wheel shows signs of wear. The five-digit odometer shows 91k miles, and total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six is equipped with triple SU carburetors and polished aluminum camshaft covers. The carburetors are said to have been recently rebuilt.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The selling dealer notes a second-gear synchronizer issue. Rust on the underside of the floor pans and other components is visible.

The car number stamped on the identification plate and the front chassis crossmember reads 876685, while the VIN on the Oregon title is listed as the same sequence prepended by “XKE”.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
