Sellers description:
Flat Floor 1962 Jaguar XKE OTS
This 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Open Two-Seater #876225 is a matching-numbers early flat floor model originally sold new in California and imported into Ontario, Canada in 1978. The current seller bought the car in 1988 and has kept the car in climate controlled storage at a friend's small restoration shop since that time. The car underwent a long term restoration as a shop side project that started in the 1990s and was only completed this year when the car was finally returned to the road. The work was done with an eye toward making the car a reliable driver rather than a concours restoration. The result is a very attractive early E-Type roadster ideal for rallies and shows.

The car was produced in late 1961 and delivered new to a Mr. Thompson in Maryville, CA, originally finished in Cream as several period photos below show. The current British Racing Green paint was applied in 2000, with the bonnet repainted around 2006. The paint looks very nice for a driver but is not show quality and shows some minor blemishes.

The most notable issues are a small paint crack in the rocker panel near the driver's door and another on the rear portion of the bonnet near the windshield, both of which can be seen in the gallery below. New Dayton chrome wire wheels wear new Vredestein tires in the correct 185HR15 size. The original wire wheels are included with the car. Rear bumpers were re-chromed with new overriders installed.

During restoration the driver's door was partially reskinned to fix a poor quality prior dent repair and a smaller patch was added to the passenger door skin. The driver's side rocker panel was also replaced, again as a dent repair and not due to rust. The early welded louver bonnet has been retained but shows evidence of prior dent repair, with a thin layer of filler in the rear center near the windshield. There are also some visible tool marks where the substructure has been straightened.

The body numbers in the trunk and bonnet are both R2535, not R2517 as shown on the data plate and the Heritage Certificate. The seller believes this to be a clerical error from when the car was new, as the serial number on the front subframe and the engine number are both correct.

The interior is in good driver condition. The seat upholstery and door cards are believed to be original and are in good condition, other than some minor wear on the edges of the seats. A new beechwood steering wheel and replacement steering wheel center are installed.

Engine #R 2854-9 is the original to the car, as confirmed by the Jaguar Heritage Certificate below. The 3.8L engine was cleaned and painted during the restoration process but was not rebuilt as it wasn't deemed necessary. A recent compression test reads 125-130 PSI in all cylinders. The clutch, throw out bearing and slave cylinder have been recently replaced and a new battery is installed.

The undercarriage is good condition with only minor problem areas addressed during restoration. Small sections of rust were cut out and patched in the passenger side foot well and on the front subframe. The driver's floor had been modified at some point in the car's history, as the floorboard was lowered to create a small hidden compartment covered with a wooden lid. The "smuggler's box" was removed and the original section of floor restored to the factory location.

The car is sold with an Ontario Ownership Document and the Jaguar Heritage Certificate is included.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
