1965 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster.

4.2 liter 6-cylinder engine, triple SU carburetors

I purchased this auto about twenty years ago and it wasn’t running when I bought it. Soon thereafter, I disassembled it with the intent of refurbishing and polishing every little bit and then reassembling it to its former whole, running self. But I haven’t had the chance to do more than disassemble and store the body, the engine and the pieces/parts. It has moved with me once and has been inside most all of this time.

The body of this car appears to have been a marriage of two cars: the rear body, engine and drive train of a 1965 roadster and the braking system, cooling system and the bonnet of a 1962 roadster. I have number plates for both. I did acquire a replacement bonnet and it comes with this package (and, sorry, have already sold the old one).

The body was originally classic white, but someone had not taken much care when they applied some heavy coats of silver paint to change its color. The interior was black, as was the hood (the convertible top for most of you).

There is some rust and some signs of old repair to certain areas of the body. Suffice to say that this project needs much TLC, but I believe all of the parts that are there are simply ripe for the restoration by a dedicated aficionado of Jaguars. I still see the great potential in this car, but unfortunately, I’ve come to the conclusion that I am not the one to take advantage of it.

For a song (and the winning bid), its yours to pickup in Tacoma, Washington.

Note - some of you may remember this same car was up for auction back in September 2007. The winning bidder bought and paid for the car, held it in storage out here in Washington State but, because of work and family committments, could not get started on the project. I am now selling the car on behalf of its owner.

On Aug-11-08 at 09:00:10 PDT, seller added the following information:
Some inquiries I’ve received so far lead me to add the following information: When I acquired this E-Type back in 1985, it was fully assembled and appeared complete, but did not run. As I disassembled it and evaluated the components, I also educated myself about the differences between the early Series I cars. After further investigation back then, I concluded the following: This car was a marriage of the rear end of a 1965 E-type and the front end of a 1962 E-Type (the other “halves” had probably been wrecked). The car has what appears to be a nicely welded seam that runs through the driver’s side sill/rocker panel area, in toward the transmission tunnel, back along the transmission tunnel to the rear of the interior floor and then out to the passenger’s side sill. I think this is the “line of demarcation” between the 1965 and the 1962 portions of the body. Before I started taking the car apart for my planned bit-by-bit restoration, I did note that the doors, bonnet and boot all fit and were aligned correctly; they also opened and shut correctly. Except for the engine and transmission, the firewall and all things forward of the firewall were from the 1962 car, including the braking system (some later brake system components are included in this auction), the cooling system (i.e., radiator and fan, which are included here), the “picture frame” (included here, stamped with the earlier serial number) and the bonnet (not the one included here). The remaining parts of the car were from the 1965, including the rear clip and suspension, the engine and drive train, the interior (including instrument panel, steering wheel, and seats with headrests) and the number plate. The purist in me wanted this to be strictly a 1965 E-Type rather than a 1962, mostly because I didn’t want to have to go out and find the correct 3.8 liter engine and transmission that came from the 1962. This car already came with the original 1965 engine, transmission and drive train; these original items are each included with this auction and are shown in the pictures. The numbers on these all match the numbers on the included serial number plate. The first step in an effort to make the car entirely consistent with a 1965 was to sell the 1962 bonnet (with the welded-in louvers), stripped of its bumpers and trim (which I still have). That 1962 bonnet was in fine shape, except it was wrong for the car. I then began a pursuit (through Hemmings) for a correct Series I bonnet with pressed-in louvers. The first one I bought, while advertised to me as a Series I bonnet, was actually a Series 1 ½ bonnet that had been modified by its owner with glass headlamp covers (I was not impressed). I sold that (with full disclosure, of course) and purchased the bonnet you see in the pictures. This bonnet appears to be what is needed for this car. (Someone recently did point out, however, that the placement of the parking lamps and side markers is, at the least, “interesting.” I think that can somehow be easily resolved or rectified by the new owner.) Back when I got the car, the interior was in terrible shape, as the car had previously been stored in a not-so-pristine garage (which was also the home of a few indiscriminate cats – the primary reason why I got rid of most of the interior “soft goods”). Most of the interior parts that are included in this auction are included to serve primarily as templates for replacement (when I got the car in 1985, some of this was just too far gone to salvage and I just got rid of it). Some other random information: The car does come with window glass but not a windscreen. The gauges are still installed in the panel and are included in the auction. The top bows are included in the auction, but not the soft top that was on the car when I got it. All of the chrome that was on the car is included (except for the trim from the 1962 bonnet). Mark.

Sorry what looks like a "run-on "narrative" above. I couldn't get the revision to take my paragraph marks.

On Aug-17-08 at 18:57:15 PDT, seller added the following information:

Please note that I changed the mileage shown above. (I remembered wrong.) The mileage shown on the odometer is actually 80,381 miles. What follows is most of the original eBay narrative from when the car was sold back in September 2007.

The Dream

I bought this car in 1985 from a fellow in Redmond, Washington who had had it for about five years but whose dream to restore it had faded. I thought I could pick up the torch, so I bought the car.

When I bought it, the car was fully assembled. My plan was to completely disassemble it (done), have the body fully restored (not done), restore the pieces and parts bit by bit myself (sporadically done), and reassemble it (not done). But time and money have kept me from fulfilling that goal and space keeps me from hanging on to the dream.

The Car: 1965 E-Type Roadster

This auction is for a 1965 Jaguar E-Type roadster, which has been in Washington State since 1967 (I don’t have the history before that). The car has a 1965/62 body, a 1965 engine (the 3-carb SU setup) and drivetrain, and a 1965 (or so) bonnet. By way of explanation, after I started the disassembly process, I discovered that this car had once been two: the front end of a 1962 and the back end (and engine and drivetrain) of a 1965. The tub is welded along a line between the firewall and the rear bulkhead. And when I first got this car, it had a 1962 bonnet on it. I sold that bonnet and ultimately purchased a Series I bonnet that was proper for a 1965 (the one that is shown here).

The original body plate from the 1965 shows the following data:

car #:
1E11217

eng #:
7E4668-9

body #:
4E2568

gear #:
EJ3696

(By the way, I also have the 1962 plate, but it is not included with this auction)

In addition to the body and bonnet shown, this auction includes the original 1965 engine (with the 3-carb SU setup and bearing the serial number above), along with all of the parts I removed from the car, most of which I bagged and tagged for identification. Obviously, many replacement parts will be needed if they can’t be restored. To complete the conversion into a full 1965 E-Type will require at least the later braking system (I have some 1965 brake system components that are included here), along with a replacement radiator and fan(s). Of note is that the dash was retained from the 1965 (it is not the aluminum type).

A note on the pictures: The pictures of the tub show that my brother jerry-rigged a spine of a boat trailer and some wood so we could move the tub around. It is not connected to the tub and is easily removed. The roughly square dark area on the left side of the tub is surface rust.

Successful bidder is responsible to arrange and pay for pickup from Tacoma, Washington.

Thanks for taking the time to view this auction. Mark.

This auction is for an original serial number plate from a 1962 Jaguar Series 1 E-Type roadster (LHD). This plate is installed just forward of the firewall and just aft of the battery tray.

As you can see in the picture, I blanked out some of the numbers and replaced them with "x"s (I understand some people just want to see all of the matching numbers so they can make their own new plate). The actual plate has the actual, unaltered numbers.

Thank you for looking and bidding! Mark.

Here is some new information:

After the listing started, I received the following question from a bidder:

Do you know if this plate has a title available to it? Or has it been salvaged and no longer able to get the title with it?

Here was my answer:

I really don't know. I would suspect that it was abandoned and that one could get a title to go with it.

And here is even more info about that:

This plate came from the car that was ultimately listed and sold (without the '62 plate) under eBay item 130245477752. That car was sold as a 1965 because so much of it was indeed a 1965, but it included major components from the front end of a 1962 (including the firewall), which were probably what was left of a '62 after its rear end was no longer viable for some reason (I'm guessing it was wrecked). As far as what really happened with the rest of the 1962 car, I don't know.
