Seen at 'E' Type UK 12-04-11.
One of the most complete and original cars ever seen.Only starter motor and soft-top frame are missing from where an original hardtop was fitted.
This car can make a 100 point restoration project if carried out with sympathy!
A must for one wanting absolute originality.

I saw this car at 'E' Type UK last week and it can only be described as a stunning restoration. The guys there are all enthusiasts and tell me it was a very original car before they started and the only panels replaced were sills and a floor. The bonnet is original and of a very early construction.Every part that HAD to be replaced has been saved for the new owner to maintain originality. The trim has been done by Mick Turley so that's about as original as you can get as well. One of the best Restorations I have seen with NO upgrades!

It didn't last long with the last owner....

875152 is a rare all matching numbers, very early, "flat floor, outside bonnet lock" 3.8L Jaguar E type roadster. The car was completed in June 1961 and delivered as a LHD car to Jaguar Cars New York. Being such an early car, aside from the outside bonnet locks and flat floors, it also features the very early bonnet construction of welded seams and cooling louvers only seen on a small number of cars. It also features some riveted braketry, again only seen on the very early hand built cars.

The first owner, Mr. Hollis A Smith from Midland Texas, kept the car from 1961 until 1966. It was sold in 1966 to a Mr. Richard A Irvin of Hughes Springs, Texas. It appears the last time it was taxed by Mr Irvin was in 2001 but the car was obviously off the road as the tax disc is still unused and on its self-adhesive backing! Mr. Irvin was a Jaguar enthusiast and there are a couple of letters from him to the E-Type Club of America. There is also an American Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate.

The car was repatriated to the UK in 2011 via a dealer to the current and just 3rd owner from new. It had spent nearly all of its life in the dry climate of Texas and as a result this matching numbers car was found to be in exceedingly rust free and original condition; a real rarity today.
The car was entrusted to known marque specialists in the UK for a comprehensive restoration. Particular emphasis was put on maintaining as much originality as possible - only items that NEEDED replacing were replaced. The car retains as much of its original shell and components as was possible resulting in a near faultless car with its original body shell and major panels.

A detailed photographic record was made before the car was stripped and as it was being stripped to document the absolute correctness of the vehicle. As the car was restored, the decision was made not to upgrade or apply any modern modifications leaving the car as pure as the day it left the factory, albeit in probably in better than new condition with extra effort being made during restoration with respect to panel fit and finishes. It is therefore believed that the indicated mileage of circa 40,000 miles is indeed the genuine and original from new.

Since its completion just over a year ago the car has been barely run in having covered just over 1,000 miles. During this period any snagging items have been attended with the result that the car is absolutely on the button and ready to be driven to Monaco and back by its next custodian. It is not only really hard to find such a well restored example but also such a detail correct and original car is almost non-existent. This is simply an opportunity not to be missed.

The most desirable early specification: flat floor, welded louvers, and outside bonnet latches
Exceptional restoration by British marque specialists
Finished in the original colors from a superb original example
Well documented, including Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate
Includes original removable hardtop and original tool roll
One of the finest early E-Types available in recent years

The example offered here was built in June 1961 and delivered through the New York dealer to Hollis A. Smith of Midland, Texas. It remained in his ownership until May 1966, when it was acquired by Vance K. Irwin through Knotts Sports Car Centre of Longview, Texas. The E-Type would remain in Mr. Irvin's family until 2010, passing to his son, Rick, in 1998, and spending the majority of that time in dry, secure storage in the Lone Star State.

Following its acquisition from the Irwins by a European owner, Colin Pearcy, the E-Type was restored by CMC Jaguar, one of the most experienced Jaguar restorers in the world, in conjunction with E-Type UK and respected master trimmer, Mick Turley. The car was returned to its original specifications, as per its Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, including the original color scheme of Carmen Black over black with a black top. Upon completion, the car was driven for a 1,000-mile "shake-down" tour of Europe, after which any nagging ills were promptly corrected so that it would both show and drive superbly.

A letter from CMC Jaguar's N.R. Goldthorp to Mr. Pearcy, a copy of which is on file, notes that "of all the E-Types that we have restored, your car was probably the most original and correct. As it had been in a dry state in the USA, it had not suffered the ravages of corrosion." A minor accident had damaged the trunk floor and number plate panel, necessitating the replacement of those panels; in addition, both outer sills were replaced. The balance of the bodywork is original Jaguar metal from 1961. "As I have indicated," Mr. Goldthorp continued, "[this car] is probably the most original early E-Type body in the world or at the very least is the most original that we have seen in the past 20 years."

Now offered from its excellent maintenance and superb care in a fine American collection, this is certainly one of the finest early E-Types to have been brought to market in recent years. Finished to a remarkable standard, including the original removable hardtop, it is not an over-restored piece of jewelry, but rather has been brought to the highest level of "how the factory did it," right down to its original ignition keys and tool roll. It is a superb example deserving of the finest home.
