With only 12 factory lightweights produced in 1963, few of us will ever see one, let along drive one. In these circumstances, a 1963 E-type modified as a lightweight is the best way to experience the look and feel of the original. The car has been awarded FIA papers including documented competition history in the late 80's in Germany.

The car offered here was converted to lightweight form in 1987 in the UK. It is a roadster / hardtop with fixed alloy top. The bonnet, top, doors and boot lid are aluminum. Side windows, rear window and headlight covers are Perspex. The car sits on 15" Dunlop racing wheels and road spec tires. Power comes from a race prepared 4.2-liter Jaguar 6-cylinder engine with triple Weber 45DCOE side draught carburettors producing 325 bhp.

5-speed gearbox, Sabelt harnesses, and VA Engineering roll cage complete the appearance and reality of a very exciting car.

After spending time in Germany, England and The Netherlands, this E-type was imported to the USA in April 2003. It was not raced but rather took a position in a small private collection until now. It will make a wonderful car for someone interested in vintage racing or vintage tours.

This 1963 Jaguar XKE is a Series I roadster that underwent a lightweight-style conversion in the 1980s in the UK to compete in International Automobile Federation sanctioned racing events and was imported into the US in 2003. The conversion reportedly included installing an aluminum body, hood, hardtop, and doors as well as modifying the engine with a wide-angle cylinder head and Weber carburetors. The car is finished in silver over red and powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes multi-point harnesses, a roll cage, a ventilated hardtop and trunk lid, and an external battery master switch. The owner acquired the car in 2012. This XKE roadster is now offered on dealer consignment in New York with service records, FIA documentation, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, import documents, and a clean Florida title.

The body was reportedly converted to lightweight aluminum and finished in silver with white decals on the doors. Additional features include a ventilated hardtop and trunk lid, hood straps, dual side mirrors, headlight covers, hood louvers, a battery master switch, plexiglass side windows, and dual exhaust outlets. The windshield is cracked.

Silver 15″ knock-off alloy wheels are wrapped in older 215/65 front and 225/70 rear Remington XT-120 CTR tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with inboard rear rotors, and the suspension features adjustable shocks.

The cockpit is trimmed in red leather and has been modified with a roll cage and multi-point Sabelt harnesses. The rear trim has been stripped, and a battery master switch has been installed underneath the dashboard.

The three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel fronts a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and a 10k-rpm tachometer. Additional gauges for amperage, water temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure are mounted on a central panel along with switchgear. The five-digit odometer shows 2k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six features dual overhead camshafts and was reportedly modified with a wide-angle cylinder head with oversized valves and triple 45mm Webers carburetors with K&N filters. An oil cooler is installed. An updated fuel system is fitted in the trunk and routes fuel through braided steel lines.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust production record trace certificate shows a completion date of March 7, 1963, factory colors, serial numbers, and delivery to Imperial Motors of Cheltenham.

According to a copy of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this racy Jag was manufactured on March 7, 1963 and supplied new to the home market as a right hand drive coupe, distributed by Henlys Limited of London to Imperial Motors in Cheltenham and sold new to L.C. Hawkins, Esq. of Swindon. The early history of the car is not recorded, but paperwork on file indicates the car was in Germany in 1986 with Frank Becker. Acquired from Mr. Becker in that year, the Jaguar was completely torn down and rebuilt as left-hand drive Semi-Lightweight Competition Roadster made to meet FIA Historic B, Period Improved/GT specifications for European sanctioned racing. During the work, the bodywork was modified and fitted with an aluminum hardtop, while the doors, hood, and truck lid were also replaced with aluminum skinned parts. The side windows, rear window, and even the headlight covers were replaced with lightweight Perspex. The heater and blower were removed, as was some of the interior trim. Numerous other period-correct performance upgrades were also made in line with those allowed by European sanctioning bodies. At some point, the original engine block was also replaced with a larger 4.2 liter unit and a later DOHC head.

Receiving its FIA Passport in 1989, the car would go on to run that year's Targa Florio Autostoriche and is understood to have run that event on at least one other occasion in addition to further high-profile European road racing events. During its Belgian ownership at this time, it was maintained by Cavallino Tuning with receipts on file describing the work completed. The E-Type made its way stateside in 2003 where it was uprated with a 5-speed transmission and ventilated disc brakes by marque specialist Doc's Jags of Scottsdale, Arizona.

Joining the present collection in 2012, it has been sparingly driven and not raced in the current ownership. Breathing through three, big 45DCOE Weber carburetors, a dyno chart on file from the early 1990s show the engine was putting out a massive 292bhp and 262 bl-ft of torque. Fitted with a VA Engineering roll cage, 4-point seatbelts, copies of receipts and records including its 1989 FIA Passport, and more, this swift cat is the perfect car for road or track. A model eligible for numerous race series and rally events, this Semi-Lightweight Roadster Recreation offers all the excitement of one of the 11 original example at a small fraction of the price.
