As the Heritage Certificate confirms, this particular car is number 749 of the run and was built on 2nd August 1963 and dispatched to its first dealership via Henlys of London on 17th August - a time of great excitement as the newspapers were full of Britain's biggest ever heist, The Great Train Robbery, which had taken place on 8th August.

Sadly, we don't know who the first owner was (Ronnie Biggs spending some of his swag perhaps?!) but we do know that it was originally Opalescent Golden Sand with a Light Tan leather interior and that the 75 PF registration number was issued in Surrey in late-1963 and is almost certainly original to the car. Interestingly though, the car was not registered until 14th October and, as there was still a huge waiting list for E-Types at this time, one wonders where it spent the first two months of its life - as a showroom exhibit perhaps?

An old green log book shows that by 1973 the E-Type was owned by a Peter Bryant of Travers Farm, Crondall, Hampshire, ownership transferring to a Peter Sebastian of The Depot in the hamlet of Isington, near Alton, Hants, in October 1974. There the trail goes cold until our vendor discovered the car languishing on a farm near Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, in the autumn of 1999 by which time it was in quite a sorry state. It had also lost its original engine (number RA29559) which had been replaced by a unit with an earlier XK block and a later Type 7E cylinder head from a Series One 4.2 E-Type (7E5104-9).

A professional motor mechanic, the vendor immediately embarked on an intensive restoration, working on the car in every spare minute he had for several months before it was finally returned to the road in the summer of 2000. The engine was found to be in very good health and needed little attention, but the original Moss gearbox was taken out and swapped for a later all-synchro box. Naturally the bodywork was restored as necessary and the whole car repainted in the bright red you see today.

The car was then used regularly over the next dozen years including two trips to Le Mans and back and numerous appearances at shows, before being more or less laid up about five years ago with just the odd summer outing to keep everything free.

Invoices on file show that the interior was retrimmed with new black leather seat covers and a new hood from Jaguar trim specialists BAS Ltd in 2008, while new chrome wire wheels and a new set of tyres were also fitted at around the same time. More recently, uprated Coopercraft brake calipers have been fitted, along with a new clutch.

Starting promptly and running nicely as we moved it around for these photos, the car has been very little used in recent years, the last MOT having expired in September 2016. Now in need of some remedial work here and there, it is being offered here as a straightforward restoration project at a very modest guide price.
