Sacrilege to repaint a gunmetal car in resale red ( and it looks more like signal red than carmen, which is considerably more orange )

1962 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 1 3.8 ROADSTER

A wonderful example of a sought-after Series 1 Roadster; the purest iteration of the design.

Its 3.8-litre straight-six engine fed by triple SU carburettors produces up to 265bhp, delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox.

This is a desirable model that was meticulously restored between 2004 and 2007.

It has matching chassis and engine numbers with a 1963 Jaguar Moss gearbox (EB 12350JS).

The car’s authenticity is confirmed through a Heritage Certificate from Jaguar-Daimler.

The V5C records just two prior keepers, with the current and third owner acquiring the car eight years ago.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

Finished in an elegant combination of Carmen Red over Biscuit leather with a black roof concealed under a black fabric tonneau cover when lowered, this timeless design oozes sophistication.

The car sports period-correct chrome 15-inch wire wheels with twin-eared knock-off hubs.

The interior is beautifully trimmed and features a wooden-rimmed steering wheel.

Some discreet upgrades have been installed, including an aluminium radiator, electric fan, stainless steel exhaust, Coopercraft upgraded brakes, a high-torque starter motor and alternator. The original starter motor is also available.

A copy of the original sales ledger from Sturgess & Sons is included, alongside a letter from the original owner dating from 2013, a green logbook, annual service and maintenance records between 2015 and 2021, MOT certificates between 2007 and 2021, and an inspection report from 2021.

CONDITION

There is no known bodywork damage to the vehicle since its restoration, which was completed in 2007.

The paintwork is in excellent condition, with the car being resprayed in Carmen Red instead of its original shade of Gunmetal as part of its three-year restoration. There are no significant flaws or blemishes to the paint.

The interior is also in superb order, with the retrimmed Biscuit leather an original option with Carmen Red paintwork. There is only a very light crease on the driver’s seat.

The only known faults are that the clock is non-functional, and the indicators do not self-cancel.

The most recent MOT test was in May 2021 at 61,643 miles, where the car passed first time and with no advisories. Despite the car being exempt from regular MOT testing due to its age, it has been regularly tested, passing every MOT since 2007 first time.

SERVICE HISTORY

The car was most recently serviced in March 2021 at 61,639 miles by JAR Specialised Automotive Services, and before this, each year from 2015.

Copies of the invoices and the work carried out between 2015 and 2021 are included in the sale, as well as photographs showing some of the restoration process.

SUMMARY

A marvellous example of an iconic British roadster, this Jaguar E-Type S1 3.8 OTS has been meticulously restored and is mechanically sorted. Sure to appeal to many collectors, this car would make a desirable addition to any assembly of classics, or could be a delightful companion for spirited drives through the countryside.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
