I owned this car in 1967, glad to know it's still on the road.

I bought this car in pieces in 1983. It had been stored dismantled in a garage in Sussex for many years. At the time I was an engineering student and we were all competing with each other to have the best old car. I thought that turning up in an E type would have the desired effect so I paid £700 including 4 new tyres. Unfortunately it took me three years to get it back on the road. After a short while owning the car I sold it and went around the world for three years with the proceeds. Quite an adventure and so I will be ever thankful for that car. I always intended my next car to be a Ferrari Daytona but by the time I had a look around the prices had got away from me. When I bought the car it had been hand painted in Magenta. I repainted it midnight blue with black interior. The car had its original engine R1243-9 at the time. I believe the car was built prior to the Geneve motor show of 1961 (August from memory).

I forgot to enter my name on my previous post but, I owned this car between 1965 and 1967. I swapped a wrecked 1071 Mini Cooper S plus cash for it from a chap in Redhill, Surrey who planned to use the S engine in an autocross mini he was building. When I owned 230 ACE it was still in its original factory red. It would be interesting to find out where it was between 1967 and 1983.

Prior to 1983 this car was stored in pieces in a garage in Waterlooville near Brighton. It was owned by a Mr Birch who ran an engineering business and planned to restore it. He told me he had had it for many years and bought it as a wreck. He dismantled it and kept all of the parts in boxes.

Yes, I placed that ad - although I had forgotten the exact wording!!
Believe it or not £7,000 was about the going rate for one in middling condition back then and was actually quite a lot of money.
Most of my friends had cars between £1000 and £3000 I suppose although some had Mini Coopers which cost about £300.
From memory a Mark 1 Escort with MOT was worth about £30 although my father bought a new Cortina Crusader which was probably £5000, big spender.

What a lovely surprise to find 'my' E Type here. I owned this car about 50 years ago....I was 20 ish. I bought it from a car dealers in Clapham, I saw her beautiful bonnet poking out of the showroom doors and knew she was going to be mine before I even got near her.......She was Carmen Red back then and the last owner (a copper I believe) had had a complete new bonet fitted, which was not cheap even back then!.....The salesman told me the brakes needed to be bled which of course meant read rear Dunlop calipers all siezed up with the road dirt that accumulates on the E types....I paid the sum of £650 for it......pure happiness followed, 20 something years old with a red convertible E Type in the 60's!......Had to fix quite a few things on her. One thing i did learn many years later off of a BBC Documentary on the E type was that some of the 1st series 1 cars had rather nice Italian bucket seats fitted as standard and that on its owm increased the value of the car by an incredible amount....you guessed it, 230 ACE had these!!!. The Jaguar bug had bitten me and i went on to own another 3 E's, the last one being the 12 cylinder. Would be pleased to get any news of her...in fact more than pleased.
