Ebay item 8/13/05
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
Current bid $16,100, no reserve, 16 bids, 6 days left in auction. 92k miles.

Sellers description:
First time ever for public sale! A 1971 XKE V12 2+2 in immaculate condition inside and out. This is a rare 4-speed car equipped with factory air conditioning, am-fm radio, adjustable steering wheel. This i am told is an extremely rare car as it is the first and best horsepower (317HP) year for the V12 coupled with a 4-speed transmission and factory air-conditioning.

This car was initially delivered in Northen California and remained there until its owner moved and transported the car to dry Arizona in the late 1980's. This vehicle has been a 1 owner car for over THIRTY YEARS and was only sold by the family to me after the owner,a 90 year old physician passed away. No expense has ever been spared in maintenace and upkeep of this car and the condition and reliability shows it! The car was repainted the original primrose yellow paint approx. 6 years ago and has always been kept in a garage with a cover on.Upon acquiring the car I had a Jaguar certified mechanic go thru the vehicle in its entirety. All seals and gaskets were replaced with contemporary gasket material. The carburators were fully serviced as was the cooling system. I drive this car in 90 degree weather without overheating. Oil pressure is strong with start-up pressure in the 60-80 range. The brakes were serviced prior to my acquisition and the tires have less than 3000 miles . The tires are quite expensive and can be reversed for a "black wall look". This car has absolutely no rust or bondo and has all its original sheet metal. Car comes with original owners manual, service manual, original documents, some service reciepts and titles. These cars are appreciating in value every year and one this special comes along only rarely.

I purchased this car on EBAY on September 1, 2005. Body and paintwork are in remarkable condition and the engine is very clean. I will record here the work I do as I own the car.

There is a tiny hole in the header tank I noticed yesterday and I have ordered a replacement that I will install this weekend.

Car is now located in San Mateo, California.

10/25/2005. Replaced the header tank. Also replaced the gearbox mounting assembly as the spring was weak and the gearbox was not held in a rigid manner. Replaced two brake fluid resevouirs as the zinc floats had corroded.

2005-11-09 19:04:11 | Mike writes:

Fluid leaking from the power steering rack. It looks like the seals are worm. After some deliberation. I decided to install a rebuilt rack, rather than try and rebuild the existing one myself. Trouble was, locating one. Finally managed to locate one at Welsh Enterprises in Ohio. Rack is now installed and working fine.

After sorting out the steering and taking the car for a real blast down the freeway (the first time I have really used the car how it was supposed to be driven), I felt as if a giant hand was holding the car back. At low revs the engine was fine, but as it was wound up, it felt as if there was not enough gas getting into the engine (no missfires, just limited power at higher revs). After a lot of investigation, I found that someone had replaced the standard Jaguar Series 3 e-type fuel pump with some form of after market fuel pump about large enough to power a small lawn mower. After replacing the pump with the correct model pump, I now get the REAL performance that the V12 is capable of delivering.

Found water under the car. Investigation revealed that the water pump is leaking. While I am replacing the water pump, I decided to also replace the power steering pump with a rebuilt model. Also found a small leak below the rear brake fluid resevoir. It just appears that the old tubing had a crack in it.

2006-08-24 13:39:15 | Mike writes:

Completed the work replacing the water pump and powers steering pump. While I was at it, had a complete front end rebuild using poly bushings throughout and new upper and lower ball joints. The poly bushings make a dramatic improvement to the handling. The koni shocks on the front of the car are great and need no maintenance or replacement. New oil pressure sender also installed.

2006-08-26 03:04:14 | Roger writes:

Be interested to learn whether you get "squeakitis" from the poly bushings. Some people have and some haven't.

2006-09-21 14:18:09 | Mike writes:

No squeaks from the new bushings at all. I like them...feels much "tighter" at the front end than even new rubber bushings.

2007-03-22 14:32:59 | Mike writes:

I still had a few problems sometimes getting the car to (almost) maximum revs. After a lot of thought, I finally discovered that the ball bearing and spring in the fuel non return valve next to the left carb was missing ! A new spring and ball bearing fixed the problem.

I thought it was time to overhaul the distributor so rather than simply try and rebuild the existing one, I opted for a "modern" replacement assemby from SNG Barrett that uses the distributor and electronic ignition system from the later XJS model. The new distributor went in easiliy and replaced the Crane system that was in there. The old distributor was not bad when I got it out, but the vacuum retard was not working and the advance weights were "sticky" but not "seized".

Latest job was to replace the 4 Stromberg carbs with a set of SU's from Burlen in the UK. The SU carb set was available in the US, but I purchased them directly from Burlen as the price was about half of what they were being sold in the US for. For those interested, here is the URL. www.burlen.co.uk/partDetail.aspx

Engine was running a little warm, so I decided to replace the radiator with a Ron Davis Aluminum model. Also replaced the thermostats at the same time. GREAT improvemnt....this radiator sure keeps this engine cool now. Replaced all three brake hoses at the same time as they felt a little "mushy" when applying the brakes hard.

2011-03-29 15:53:54 | Mike writes:

After about to stop at some traffic lights, I pushed down on the clutch pedal and it went all the way to the floor. I managed to drive the car back home (without using the clutch) and found the clutch slave cylinder was pouring out fluid. I changed the clutch slave cylinder and also the clutch master cylinder. At the same time, I also replaced the brake master cylinder.

Relocated the ignition amplifier onto the bulkhead from its original location in the "V" between the heads. Drastic reduction in temperature of the amplifier after it was relocated. Also replaced the spark plugs to cure a misfire above about 4000 RPM. Checked distributor for seized advance...but it was fine with no problem.

Sellers description:
Manual 4 speed 1971 V12 XKE 2+2.

Please note, I am selling this car in a "NON RUNNING - AS IS" condition as it is overheating and I no longer have time to spend on it.

I purchased this car in September 2005 from an owner in Phoenix and he told me that the car was originally from California. You can check out the history on the website XKEDATA using the VIN number (1S71933).

There is also a video on YouTube...the YouTube reference is Z-duaAav7CI

Car is a manual 4 speed with air conditioning (that works).

It has 9.1 compression ratio.

I have done (or have had done) a great deal of mechanical work on the car to get it to this point and have many bills and receipts of the work done that amount to over $18,000.

The air pump has been removed and the emission ports in the head have been sealed. The vacuum retard to the distributor has also been sealed off...consequently the car has no emission controls installed on it. As it is a 1971 car, I have not needed to have the car smogged in California.

The following parts have been replaced during the 10 years of my ownership.

New plugs
New header tank.
Some new hoses.
New Water Pump.
New BELL stainless steel exhaust system with quad outlets at back.
New fuel pump. New clutch slave cylinder
New clutch master cylinder,
New brake master cylinder,
New aluminum radiator (I believe from Ron Davis).
4 New Vredestein Sprint Classic 205/70 VR 15 tires with less than 50 miles on them
Rebuilt steering rack.
Four new SU carburetors (HIF44's) fitted (to replace Strombergs) using the Jaguar V12 SU replacement kit from Burlen in the UK
New rear engine stabilizer.
Rebuilt front brake calipers,
New front brake hoses
Air conditioning recharge
Opus ignition conversion kit from SNG Barratt ( Converts OPUS ignition system to the later constant energy ignition),
New LUCAS distributor cap.
New "Retrosound" am/fm radio.
Some LED lights in gauges.
New front ball joints,
Poly bushing set (replaces rubber bushings) on front suspension.
Rebuilt Power steering pump .
New oil pressure sender.
Gas tank removed and boiled out.
Some rubber sealing trim replaced.
New front tie rod ends.
The car had been fitted with Koni shock absorbers on the front before I purchased it.

The car has been repainted before I purchased it and there are issues with the finish on the passenger side door and right lower side of the bonnet. The paint was obviously put on too thick and not keyed to the original finish and has flaked off on the door and front side of bonnet. There is also some cracking and small chips on the top of the hood on the drivers side where you would typically lift up the hood (see picture)

I would say the inside of the car is "tatty" (see pictures) and needs to be redone. Someone has (poorly) replaced the headlining in the car.

It comes with some spare parts ...a couple of 12 volt VW Jetta fans that I never got round to fitting after I installed the new radiator, original jack and whatever else I can find in my garage (including some LED replacement bulbs, spare plugs, radio accessories, some new rubber sealing pieces etc. ), a workshop manual and a number of other part books.

Car is located about 10 miles south of San Francisco airport.
