The original distributor was Peter Linder of Frankfurt

The Interior

Trimmed in white leather

Gentle patination here and there

Smart brown carpeting

Complementing the exterior, the inside of this E-Type has been retrimmed in white leather which presents very well. There are of course a few marks from use and a little wear but no damage we could see. Naturally, the driver’s seat displays the most signs of use whereas the others exhibit remarkably little patination. As a 2+2, this Jaguar has the added benefit of rear seating which looks to have been used very little in this example since the reupholstery work was carried out.

Brown carpeting lines the cockpit and is seemingly in very good shape with little wear to speak of. The headlining is also correctly affixed and in good order.

The dashboard exhibits a delightful level of patination with some age-related wear around the switchgear and instruments. The vendor informs us that everything functions exactly as it should with the exception of the radio.

Sitting behind that wood-rimmed steering wheel conjures up a real sense of excitement as you peer down that long bonnet with its prominent ‘power bulge’. These E-types are great cars for mile munching and their interiors perfectly suited to long journeys

The Exterior

White paintwork

Open headlights

Sporting Geco bullet wing mirrors and chromed wire wheels

On the outside, everything appears in very good order and this Jaguar looks great from every angle. We all know what Enzo Ferrari reportedly said of the E-Type’s styling and those flowing lines look as great today as they did back in 1968.

The white paintwork appears in very good condition with few blemishes to be seen. Some anti-chip paint has been added to the lower quarters which looks to have been completed to a good standard. The bodywork too looks really straight with even panel gaps and good door fit. The vendor comments that the brightwork has a few imperfections here and there but it presents well overall. All of the light lenses appear in good shape as does the glasswork. Underneath, this E-Type is smart and we couldn’t see any corrosion.

The wire wheels are in great shape and we couldn’t see any damage to the spokes. The vendor informs us that the tyres have plenty of tread remaining.

The Mechanics

4.2-litre straight-six

Manual gearbox

Drives really well

With a 4.2-litre straight-six fed by three SU carburettors under the bonnet, this Jaguar can really shift and wouldn’t embarrass itself even amongst today’s traffic. Benefitting from a four-speed manual gearbox transmitting all that power to the rear wheels, this E-Type is both engaging and entertaining out on the road.

The vendor informs us that it starts, runs and drives exceptionally, with no faults to report. We’re assured that there is no smoke or indeed any untoward noises when running. The six cylinder engine ticks over smoothly and crescendos to a roar when you drop a gear and press your right foot to the floor.

Car returns to market 3/24

This Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2 2+2 is a fine example of the famously beautiful classic British sports car.

Under its long bonnet is the original ‘numbers matching’ 4.2-litre straight-six fed by triple SU carburettors, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The odometer displays 95,108 kilometres, however this is not warranted.

This left-hand drive Series 1 E-Type 2+2 was originally delivered to Peter Lindner in Frankfurt, Germany, in August 1968.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

As shown by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust production record certificate, this E-Type was originally finished with Opalescent Silver Grey paintwork over a Dark Blue interior. It was fully resprayed in white during its restoration 10 years ago, when the cabin was also retrimmed in white leather.

It rides on 15-inch chrome wire wheels, which are shod in a set of Michelin tyres which the seller notes are in poor condition, and would benefit from replacement.

Factory-fitted equipment includes a number of auxiliary gauges, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a Grundig radio.

The car will be accompanied by its registration and Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificates.

CONDITION

The resprayed white paintwork is described by the seller as being in generally good condition, showing the odd stone chip, scuff and mark, but no major blemishes.

The seller notes that the car’s bonnet it not properly gapped, and will require attention.

Inside, the retrimmed cabin presents well, with some wear on front seats’ piping, creases on the front seats, and discolouration on the centre console and gear gaiter. Elsewhere, there are cracks on the horn push, and a general ‘patina’ on the touchpoints.

The seller notes that the radio is not currently functional.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
