Vehicle Description

Early 1965 Jaguar XKE series 1 fixed head coupe, two seater, CALIFORNIA CAR, 4.2 liter, ALL numbers matching, engine block, head, chassis body tag and data plate. The expert opinion is that if you want to own a Jag coupe, this is the type Jag coupe to own, series 1 , 4.2 liter covered headlights, toggle switches, syncro trans, spinners and smaller bumpers. The most drivable and desirable.

This car was originally sold new in California, also spent time in Seattle , then in Ohio in long term storage, just out. The original color is Golden Sand. The original paint shown pictured under the bonnet and trunk floor is not touched up. The car starts right up, no smoke, blue or otherwise, good oil pressure , runs good, and the temp gauge works . The choke works, only needed a few minutes, then the car runs fine. The transmission works fine syncros, ok, clutch is fine, smooth, doesn’t grab or shudder. The brakes have new calipers and lines in the front, new master and servo and fluid ( still clear) installed a few years ago and seem to work fine. After market cooling fan installed. The yellow paint is bubbling and stained in some areas. I believe the paint was stripped with a chemical stripper and was not cleaned well before the paint applied. All of the metal panels on this car are original, none replaced for rust or accidents. The rear wheel arches are very solid, some bubbling on the drivers side, the metal behind the arches is straight and solid . The bonnet is all original, no rust through, even under the inner wells under the undercoating is original paint. The rockers are original, the passenger side is excellent, the drivers side will have to be patched by the battery area, the rest is solid. The passenger door is good, the drivers door has bubbling at the bottom by the seam .

The trailing arms are pictured, left and right, absolutely solid , no rust. There is rust at the bottom edge of the rear hatch opening. The steering wheel was broken and amateurishly repaired. The odometer shows 74,000 miles and is actual.

Trunk floor is original, pictured is the trunk floor without the gas tank and spare tire, the area was undercoated, the undercoating was removed and 90% of the original paint is still intact. The interior is original except for the front seats, they were replaced with black seats with the unusual backing, these were not dyed. The seats are not torn . The windows roll up and down fine, the back hatch opens fine.

The drivers floor pan has a rust through, right where the floor pan meets the firewall. (pictured). I believe that either the clutch or brake masters leaked brake fluid into this area and over a long time, must have eaten the metal. This area has that kind of look, acid eaten . I don’t believe you would have to replace the whole footwell, just the front edge. The passenger floor footwell is perfect, no rust at all. Original headliner is fine, no rips or tears. Emergency brake works , the brake lights work. The directional lights work, right and left. One headlight works , no tail lights on. The wipers work, the radio does not work, the power antenna works. The exhaust is solid except the 6 inches of flexible piping that needs replaced. The wire wheels have light rust and pitting, the tires are Michelin and old. The heater box needs replaced. The spare tire is flat (needs tube) The small tag above the data plate : J/65 is a California tag. Also, the engine has a California approved crankcase devise. The body tag is still pop riveted behind the rear license plate area and is correct. The heater is not hooked up, the tac does not work, needs a new carpet kit , horn button is missing, drivers tail light cover broken and the right front directional lens is cracked. The drivers side drip rail chrome has a vertical crack in it. The window chrome is pretty nice , almost no pitting. The windshield chrome trim is tired. The bumpers are original and need re-chroming as do the amco bars and the tail lights. The exterior door handles are fair. Ohio Title.

The expert opinion is that if you want to own a Jag coupe, this is the type Jag coupe to own, series 1 , 4.2 liter covered headlights, toggle switches, syncro trans, spinners and smaller bumpers. The most drivable and desirable.

In reading through this description and look closely at the pictures, I would be willing to bet large amounts of cash that the driver's side frame would need to be replaced. With the front of the driver's floor and the driver's rocker being damaged it would be just too much to expect the frame tube to be OK under the battery box.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
