The iconic Jaguar E Type was launched to a rapturous reception at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961 and nearly fifty years on still holds a special place in motoring history. One of the fastest cars of the era, capable of touching 150 mph, and still eye wateringly beautiful, the E Type offered performance levels at a price no other manufacturer could hope to match. All E Types are sought after today but the 4.2 Series 1 is widely regarded as the best of the breed, due to the torquier engine, fully synchro gearbox, an alternator and Lockheed brake servo. Just 1,584 right-hand drive 4.2 E Type fixed heads were built, making this one of the rarest variants out of more than 70,000 built all up.
According to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate supplied with the car, this particular 4.2 FHC had a build date of October 26, 1967 and was dispatched to the Wolverhampton agents Charles Attwood on November 13, 1967. The car was originally finished in dark blue with matching trim and the certificate confirms it retains the original engine.
Cosmetically restored by the previous owner, with the bodywork done in Bendigo, Victoria around five years ago and maintained by Classic Car Restorations in Sydney ever since, recent work carried out includes a new brake booster and master cylinder, rebuilding the SU carburetors, a new water pump and thermostat, new radiator hoses and a new fuel pump. All the wheel bearings have been done, a new alternator fitted, extra cooling fans and two new exhausts. Inside there is a new dash pad, new rubbers on the doors and rear hatch and new chrome surrounds and rubbers on the headlights. The engine bay has been detailed and the overall condition of the car is tidy.
A real plus is the addition of air conditioning, nicely integrated without altering the interior, which in turn has a nice patina, right down to the period Radiomobile unit.
The car comes with an original Owner’s Handbook plus a factory workshop manual and spare parts catalogue, in addition to the JDHT Certificate. This E Type ticks all the right boxes, being a desirable manual, factory right-hand drive 4.2 Series 1 and is a great driver’s car.
