This 1968 Jaguar XKE Series 1.5 roadster was purchased by the current owner in 1978 and received a cosmetic refurbishment in the 1980s that consisted of a repaint in Signal Red and replacement of the black vinyl seat covers and carpet. The car is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission, both of which were overhauled in 2019 by the seller’s company, Max Motorsports of Topeka, Kansas, following approximately 10 years of storage. Equipment includes 15″ knock-off wheels, dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, a black soft top and top boot, a luggage rack, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a push-button AM/FM radio. The engine was removed to replace seals in 2019, the brake system was serviced in 2020, and maintenance in November 2022 reportedly included an oil change and fluid service. This XKE roadster is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, service records, tools, a jack, and a clean Kansas title in the owner’s name.

This example left the factory in Signal Red and was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment in the 1980s. Additional features include a black soft top and boot, a chrome luggage rack, a driver-side door mirror, and upswept dual center-exit exhaust tips.

Chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels are wrapped in 185-series Coker Classic Redline tires that were mounted in January 2020. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes. Service in 2020 included replacement of the brake caliper pistons, brake flex hoses, and the upper ball joints and dust boots, as well as adjustment of the lower ball joints and repainting of the rear suspension components.

The cockpit features bucket seats that were reupholstered in black vinyl during the 1980s refurbishment. Replacement black carpets were also installed at that time. Equipment includes an AM/FM pushbutton radio, an analog clock, and three-point seat belts.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths gauges including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer. Center-mounted instruments include gauges for voltage, oil pressure, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 13k miles. The speedometer was replaced prior to the owner’s acquisition of the car, and total mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six is fitted with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and was removed and overhauled in 2019. Work at that time included installing an aluminum flywheel and replacement engine seals and mounts, servicing the radiator, re-coating the exhaust manifolds in porcelain, polishing the intake manifold, cam-cover ribs, and engine breather cover, and repainting the engine and accessories. An oil change and fluid service are stated to have been completed in November 2022.

The engine stamp 7E17061-9 corresponds with the engine number noted on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate and the number stamped on the data plate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. In 2020, the clutch and rear hubs were serviced, and replacement differential and rear-hub seals were installed.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists the build date, original colors, and drivetrain numbers. Service records, tools, and a jack are also included in the sale.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
