1965 Jaguar 4.2 E-Type Series 1 Open Two Seater (OTS) concours candidate. Many refer to this XKE as the quintessential sports car. I have owned the car for the last 6 years. I purchased the car to restore at my home and built a 3 stall shop with a lift for that very purpose. With a change in my work status and some difficult decisions, my dream of restoring the most beautiful car ever built will not be possible at this time. I, like many of you, have a love affair with the entire spectrum of Jaguars. I've owned many (and 4 at the same time not long ago) from XJ6's, an XK8, and 3 different E-Types. I've sold all of them except for this E-Type.

This car is in the middle of the most preferred era of E-Types. It is the covered headlight, 3xSU carb 4.2L, synchronized 4-speed transmission made from 1965 to 1967. This car is titled in Texas as a 1966 but was made in 1965 based on engine stamps and other castings that show 1965. All numbers and dates match the car plaque and the car is Registered with the JAGUAR DAIMLER Heritage Trust (certificate included). They concur that the car could/should be titled as a 1965. I was planning to change the title when I finished the restoration. I suspect, many years ago, someone either mistakenly changed the title date or gained a year (opps!) for resale value. Either way, it's the same car and fully documented. The car was built on 8 March 1965 and it rolled into Jaguar Cars New York 23 March 1965. The car came Opalescent Silver Blue with dark blue interior and a blue top from factory. The car was sold new on 5 June 1965.

I bought the car when it was 95% disassembled and used a U-Haul truck to get it home. The metal body work had been completed and the surface paint removed by sandblasting and left bare. I built a body rotisserie to hold the tub and disassembled the Independent Rear Suspension (IRS). The car is rust through free with only surface rust apparent due to no primer being applied after the blasting. The bonnet and front rails are in primer and await the final body surface sanding and paint to reassemble. This car is entirely disassembled except the IRS. The IRS was cleaned and refurbished with new bushes, bearings, races, rubber, painted, lubricated and reassembled. It now has new disks, rebuilt stainless steel sleeved calipers, new brake pads, and all new stainless steel hardware (I have the original bolts bagged and deliverable, too). The assembled IRS is on a wheeled pallet for easy movement and is bagged to keep out moisture and shop dust.

The engine has been "cooked" by a local machine shop to clean it of all non-metal material. They inspected and declared the block sound. They removed the valves, springs, and guides from the head. They blew out the crank. It has since just "sat" so the cleaned surfaces have flash rusted. Not a problem for the machine shop.

This car comes with a factory hardtop that is in rough condition. Also, an additional door so that the chrome handle can be salvaged.
The car is ready for cleaning and painting. I started on the front suspension, but only on one side. I also started buying new parts that would be needed to make this a show winner.

New parts include:
* Rear view mirror
* Rear shock absorbers (already installed)
* Front shock absorbers
* Disk pads
* 4 disks (two installed)
* Chrome exhaust resonators
* Trim plate for toggle switches
* Number identification plate (must be stamped as original)
* Signal lenses

Rebuilt items include:
* The IRS is done (outside bearings, races, brake line, rubber, stainless steel bolts, washers, lock nuts)
* Brake master cylinder, booster, clutch cylinder, clutch slave, and all 4 brake calipers were stainless steel sleeved
* Exhaust manifold has brand new black porcelain (very, very nice!)
* Air cleaner barrel is cleaned and painted
* Center console frame is cleaned and primed

This car is 98% complete. However, that does not mean that 98% is usable! Depending on how you want to restore this concours candidate you might replace more or less than another buyer. I was going to drive this car when finished, but I was still going to replace the known items, like:

* Wiring harness
* 4 tires and tubes
* Convertible top (bows and frame are there but top is rough)
* Hardtop rear plexiglass
* Clutch
* Brake lines (and gas line)
* Interior (seat frames are good)
* Machine the engine
* Exhaust is there but... I was going stainless steel.
* New rubber

Note: Except for the tires and tubes, all the original leather, bolts, wiring, clutch, interior bits and pieces are all bagged and included in the sale.

I know nothing about the transmission except that it is original and turns fine. I was told it worked when removed many, many years ago. I have no reason to doubt it is fine.

The chrome spoke wheels look true and solid. The the finish is not perfect but will clean up very nicely. The overall chrome condition is usable for a driver but concours would need re-plating.

After review of all the parts, I find that the car is missing very few items to complete. From a restoration point of view you could not find a better project to work with and much of the work has been done. So, if you are seeking an all numbers matching, complete, restorable, and original series one, that could be investment grade concours candidate, this is the one to get.

Other parts including those I intended to discard and parts of other cars that don't even belong to this model will be included in the sale. I noticed, for instance, that valve covers for a Series II are in the pictures. I have the polished aluminum covers for the 1965 on the shelf next to the triple-carbs and intake manifold. All are yours in the sale.

This is a very nicely restored XKE Roadster that is one of the most sought after of the Jaguar series I models. With covered headlights this 1965 open two seater still has style and class. It has been restored by a Jaguar professional, and has been well maintained since the restoration, driven sparingly, and kept in a collection in San Diego, CA. Outfitted in its original colors of opalescent silver blue with a dark blue interior, it makes a great color combination. It has been shown at a local Jaguar Concours were it scored very well shortly after its restoration was completed. It is a wonderful looking, and driving car as it stands, and could be taken to a little higher level if you wish quite easily. It is truly a very desirable example ready to be driven and enjoyed.
