1962 – Jaguar Type E Roadster 3.8 Serie 1 ex Sylvain Garant
French Grey Card
Chassis #877183
- Sold new in France by garage Delecroix
- Bought new by Sylvain Garant, then Ferrari 250 GTO driver - Vintage winners
- Version 3.8 Series 1 sought after
- Beautiful working condition and presentation
It was late, at the age of 37, that Sylvain Garant entered motor racing. This authentic gentleman driver has indeed waited to have firmly established his company before embarking on motor racing. Once launched, it will show a real bulimia, running for more than 10 years, taking the start of the most beautiful events (Tour de France Automobile, 24 Hours of Le Mans, 1000 Kilometers of Paris, 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring or Targa Florio) at the wheel of the most beautiful cars. In love with beautiful and powerful mechanics, he will be faithful to Ferrari for a long time, successively owning the three most beautiful of the 250 lineage: GT, GTO and LM... Before falling in love with the most exclusive Porsche 911 (ST in particular). His extensive track record, which includes a title of France Champion in 1968, makes him one of the most versatile and successful private drivers of his generation.
If his career is intimately linked to Ferrari and then Porsche, we must not forget that Sylvain Garant started at the wheel of a more modest Jaguar Type E. In 1962, he ordered the car that illustrated these pages from the brand's French importer, Garage Delecroix, in Paris. The roadster (Open Two-seater) driven on the left chassis number 877186 was delivered to him on April 25. If the car today sports a very beautiful gray shade, it was original cream white with black interior and hood. It is known that this car was initially intended for his leisure, but that he took advantage of his holidays to register for the 6th Rallye des Violettes, which took place in the Pyrenees in the summer of 1962. Perfectly neophyte, and without co-driver (!), he nevertheless manages to make the 5th time in the scratch ... and win his class! Encouraged by this result, he lined up at the start of the famous Mont-Dore Hill Climb. The competition is tough, but our beginner gentleman driver still ranks in 12th place. A month later, he lined up for the Albi Grand Prix, which inaugurated the Circuit du Séquestre that year. He finished 3rd and, short of brakes, understood that he had to change his mount to play at the top of the ranking. A month later, at the Cognac Rally, he unveiled his brand new Ferrari 250 GT...
We then know little about Sylvain Garant's Type E, but the car now presents itself to us in a beautiful condition, both cosmetic and mechanical. The day before our test, its current owner had just participated in a two-day rally totaling more than 600 km, without the slightest worry. Note that the block is not matching numbers, the cylinder head number R5085-8 is the original one. The Type E 3.8 roadsters of the first series are sought-after cars, and finding one that has raced, especially in the hands of one of the most endearing French drivers of the 1960s, is an opportunity not to be missed. Notice to lovers of historic automobiles.
