This serial #1. Not my car. Belongs to Mike Mueller in Texas. This car was used in the early publicity shots, articles and literature. Disc wheels.

Car featured in August 2000 Jaguar Journal as first V-12 E-Type. Includes quite a few pictures including a nice clear one showing the numbers on the ID plate. Ah HA!

One interesting thing about the car is the trunk lid they (the factory) used originally was ear-marked for a Series II OTS so it had the holes in it for the SII type trunk badges. One of the pictures in the article shows the underside of the trunk lid where you can clearly see the old holes welded up when they converted it to the SIII style badging.

Also the first car dealer to get the car (after it was widely used for various car shows in Detroit, Chicago and possibly New York as well as the model introduction in Palm Springs) was in Fresno California and that dealer kept the car until 1976, driving ti only 6000 miles but never licensing it. It was finally sold on January 25, 1976 to an owner who kept the car until 1993 adding only 2200 miles for a total of 8995. Owner number three stored the car (afraid to drive it because of it's rarity). Mr. Mike Mueller (current owner) bought it with 8998 miles showing and with a California license plate of "No 1 V12" The California sales sticker was still in the lower right hand corner of the windshield.

BTW, the engine number DOES end in a "-9" like the XK engines rather than the normal V-12 SA, SB, LA, and etc designations.

The Lowdown on Ser. III #1

My name is Bill Gaby. I have been asociated with Hornburg Jaguar in Los Angeles since 1954. I read the article on the 1971 V12 Roadster that you now own and I can shed some light on this vehicle which you may want in your records.

A 1971 V12 Roadster Serial 001 was shipped to Charles H. Hornburg Jr. Inc., who at that time was the Jaguar distributor for Jaguar Cars in Southern California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Hawaii.

It was shipped from England via Pan American Air Cargo. I have a photgraph taken at the airport of this car with the Pan Am aircraft in the background. On the back of the photo I had written "Feb. 1971." So I have to assume it arrived sometime during the month of February.

I remember the car very well. We used it as a display car. We loaned it to the Jaguar dealers in our territory to show and to take customer orders for future deliveries.

I can attest to the fact that it was never used as a test car or a press car. Nor was it used at the V12 introduction in Palm Springs, CA, in April 1971. As I recall, there were no roadsters at the introduction. When dealers outside of the Los Angeles metro area requested use of it - it was always shipped to them by auto transport.

I believe in late 1971 or early 1972 after six small shipments of the V12 roadsters began to arrive for distribution to dealers that Chuck Hornburg decided to sell the car. Eddie Rontell, our Jaguar dealer in Fresno, had approached me and asked if he could purchase the car. Chuck Hornburg at first thought he would keep it but later agreed to let Mr. Rontell buy it. I doubt if it had over 1,000 miles on the odometer when sold.

I believe that is about all I can tell about the #1 V12 Jaguar roadster and hope I have cleared the air concerning the early years, ownership and usage of it after its arrival at Hornburg Jaguar.

From the above article it was mentioned that this car was featured on the covers of both Road & Track and Car & Driver magazines in May '71. Having been owned by a dealer in Fresno, California for 6 years it was finally sold in '76 as new with 7000 miles on the odometer. Only 2k miles were added in the next 16 years. The 3rd owner didn't drive the car at all and it remained in the garage for 10 years. The car now has 8995 miles on it.

I own 1S70004BW, which was completed on 1. August 1970 as one of the batch of 6 cars that served pre-production purposes and believed to be the oldest 12 cylinder in existence. It got shipped to the US in November 1970 and only sold out of the NY showroom mid 1971. Appreciate contact with the current owner of 1S20001, as with cars are apparently the oldest of it's kind from the start of Series 3.
