Car to be at auction 6/12
www.bonhams.com/auctions/20165/lot/445/

Auction description:
3 Jun 2012 12:30 p.m. Greenwich, Connecticut
Collectors' Motorcars
Auction 20165
445•
Single long term ownership, 28,000 miles from new and completely documented
1964 Jaguar E Type Series I 3.8 Liter Roadster
Chassis no. 880249
Engine no. RA 3722-9
Bonhams has a tradition of finding the best and most original examples of popular classic icons and this early E type follows firmly in those foot steps. The car is a wonderfully documented, 28,000 mile example which resided in one family's stewardship for 45 years.

Purchased on December 24, 1963 by Dr. Henry N. Hillard as a Christmas gift for his wife, Ethel, the roadster remained with the Hillards for the rest of their lives. Jaguar Heritage documentation confirms Dr. Hillard as the original owner as well as verifying that the car retains all its original integrity, including numbers matching engine, as well as chassis, gearbox and body numbers. The livery was Opalescent Golden Sand with a tan interior and Sand top.

Alongside its self evident originality, the car benefits from fabulous and rarely seen early documentation including its original Bill of Sale from Ladd Motors (where Dr Hillard traded in his 1962 Buick Convertible), registration records, Jaguar Manufacturers Warranty Card, Jaguar Periodic Maintenance Vouchers as well as the original tools.

Running and driving this early 3.8 Litre 'E' represents a perfect automobile for inclusion in the growing number of preservation class events.
Estimate:
US$ 45,000 - 55,000

Barn discovery, single long term ownership, 28,000 miles from new and completely documented
1964 Jaguar XKE Series I 3.8 Liter Roadster
Chassis no. 880249

Essentially same as above. Running and driving this early 3.8 Liter 'E' represents the perfect basis for a concours restoration or sympathetic work to enhance its present condition to a preservation-type car.
Estimate:
US$ 45,000 - 55,000
£29,000 - 35,000
€36,000 - 45,000

Conceived and developed as an open sportscar, the Jaguar E-Type debuted at the Geneva Salon in March 1961 in Coupé form. The car caused a sensation - spontaneous applause breaking out at the unveiling - with its instantly classic lines and a 140mph-plus top speed. The design owed much to that of the racing D-Type, a monocoque tub forming the main structure while a tubular spaceframe extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the 3.8-litre, triple-carburettor, 'S' unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150.

Its engine aside, only in terms of its transmission did the E-Type represent no significant advance over the XK150, whose durable four-speed Moss gearbox it retained. The latter was replaced when the 4.2-litre engine was introduced on the Series 1 in October 1964, a more user-friendly all-synchromesh gearbox and superior Lockheed brake servo forming part of the improved specification together with the bigger, torquier engine. Apart from '4.2' badging, the car's external appearance was unchanged but under the skin there were numerous detail improvements, chiefly to the electrical and cooling systems, and to the seating arrangements. Top speed remained unchanged at around 150mph, the main performance gain resulting from the larger engine being improved flexibility.

The car offered here is a wonderfully documented, 28,000 mile example which resided in one family's ownership for 45 years.

Completed on the 4th October 1963 in Golden Sand, with Light Tan interior and Sand coloured hood, this car was then dispatched to Jaguar Cars, New York on the 8th November 1963.

This is perhaps the last opportunity to acquire a Series 1 3.8 Litre E-Type Roadster with such originality, provenance and known ownership with such low mileage and ownership, not to be missed.

November 1963 an Jaguar Cars, New York entsandt.
