Car to be at auction 1/16

rmsothebys.com/az16/arizona/lots/1962-jaguar-e-type-series-1-roadster/1078376

Auction description:

Arizona 28-29 January 2016

1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster

Chassis no. 877396

Without Reserve

Engine no. R 5813-9

Body no. R 3980

Gearbox no. EB 4953 JS

Without Reserve

The 1962 E-Type Roadster on offer is certainly one of the finest available. It was sold new through Jaguar Cars New York on June 25, 1962, to an H. Cadwell and was finished in Cream with a black interior and matching top. It was later acquired by the current consignor, believed to be just the fourth owner, in 1982, and he has owned the car for an incredible 33 years! A Jaguar Club of North America judge for 45 years, he has been heavily involved with restoring Jaguars. In the course of restoring his own cars throughout his career, the consignor has won four JCNA National 1st Awards for a 1938 SS 100, 1952 XK 120, 1960 Mk IX, and 1992 XJS, as well as two JCNA National 2nd place prizes for his 1934 SS and 1960 XK 150 S.

At 79,751 original miles, the E-Type on offer received a bare-metal rotisserie restoration and has been prepared as a National 1st Award challenger. It has covered barely 10 miles since the fully documented restoration, when every part was meticulously disassembled and either rebuilt or replaced. The drivetrain was rebuilt, along with the brakes, suspension, and all the electrics, including wiring harness, gauges, relays, motors, and a sophisticated and undetectable generator/alternator.

The car is finished in glistening black paint, with laser-straight fenders and doors and precise panel fit. The crimson leather interior has matching red carpet, under-laid with insulated Koolmat insulation throughout, and all rubber seals are new. A period-correct Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo is fitted, and the car is crowned with a black soft top, boot, and factory black hardtop. The chrome wire wheels are new, as are the redline tires. Also included is a set of red leather fitted luggage for weekend getaways.

The consignor impresses that this car is correct to the smallest details that would be noticed by expert judges. These include all the factory stickers for the air cleaner, brake booster, and other accessories. The car is accompanied by a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, owner's manual, factory toolkit and grease gun, jack with storage bag, knockoff hammer, and an extensive file of receipts and documentation.

Includes factory hardtop and fitted leather luggage

This lovely first-series E-Type was sold new through Jaguar Cars New York on 25 June 1962 to H. Caldwell, as per its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, which accompanies the car. It was finished in Cream with a black interior and matching hood. Today it is rendered in stunning Black over crimson leather with matching red carpets underlaid with insulated Koolmat for comfortable cruising. A period-correct Blaupunkt AM-FM radio is fitted along with a black boot, soft top, and factory black hardtop. Recent chrome wire wheels replete with classic redline tires add to the dashing appearance. Fitted red leather luggage is included for weekend getaways.

Used sparingly and restored by a former four-time JCNA National First Place award winner, this Jaguar was prepared with the intention of competing with the best. A meticulous rotisserie restoration ensued with every part either rebuilt or restored. The drivetrain was rebuilt along with the brakes, suspension, electricals, gauges, relays, motors, and a sophisticated but undetectable generator/alternator. Details like factory stickers for the air cleaner, brake booster, and other accessories were attended to, and the owner's manual, grease gun, jack with storage bag, and knock-off hammer are included along with an extensive file of receipts and documentation.

Whether cruising or showing, this stunning Jaguar is sure to make an impression.

Car returns to auction 8/23

Auction description:

1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Roadster

Monterey Jet Center Auction 2023 | Estimate: $225,000 - $275,000

Chassis No. 877396

Engine No. R 5813-9

Transmission No. EB 4950 JS

Body No. R 3980

“Suddenly there was a great stir and this magnificent, fabulously low and long sports car arrived. I was absolutely enthralled by it…”

-Stewart Bladon, for sixty years the road test writer for The Autocar, vividly remembers his first encounter with the Jaguar E-Type at the 1961 Geneva Auto Show.

The journey of this second-year E-Type Open Two Seater, chassis number 877396, began at Jaguar Cars New York. Finished in the popular Cream over black interior scheme, it was delivered to H. Caldwell on 25 June 1962. It is believed there were two more owners before it was acquired around 1983 by its caretaker for the next 33 years, a Jaguar Club of North America judge of 45 years who was noted for his restoration craft. Other Jaguars he owned and restored have earned four JCNA National 1st and two JCNA National 2nd Awards. At 79,751 original miles chassis number 877396 was given a rotisserie restoration to the same standards, now finished in Black over Crimson leather. As one would expect, the restoration was performed down to the smallest details which a Jaguar expert would acknowledge and appreciate. Koolmat insulation was laid under the matching red carpeting, and a period-correct Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo was installed. A matching black soft top, boot, and factory hardtop complete the presentation of the roadster.

This E-Type is accompanied by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, along with a toolkit with grease gun, jack with storage bag, and a spare tire. Matching Crimson fitted leather luggage is included. With its purity of form and scintillating function, this wonderfully restored early E-Type is as enthralling as ever.
