Lot 225 at Classic Car Auctions sale of Classic Cars at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre near Leamington Spa on 19 March 2016. Sold for £40,150. Catalogue description below. The URL is

A beautiful Series III E Type. According to the Jaguar Heritage certificate, this 1971 example was first supplied to a gentleman in Bournemouth by Henlys the main dealership and the car was subsequently shipped out to Italy in 2009. It passed through the hands of three significant owners whilst over in Italy, one being Dario Laraghi, the son of the president of Alfa Romeo from 1960 to 1974. The car was purchased by the vendor whilst out in Italy and exported back to the UK.

It was promptly sent to J-Cat, Independent Jaguar specialists in Norwich and, after a thorough inspection, a programme of works was undertaken to make it ready for UK roads. An MoT was issued in October 2015 and certain upgrades were made to enhance the driving experience. Whilst out in Italy, OGL220 took part in the 500 Miglia Tour around the country and there are some interesting pictures available showing this. The car now benefits from a full DVLA history showing the history whilst on home shores.

Exterior: Good quality paintwork, good shut lines, good chrome (odd blemishes and pitting). Glass, seals, locks and latches all good or excellent.

Interior: All original, lovely patina. No damage to seals, door cards, headlining, etc. Rear section undamaged and very clean. New quality carpet 2015. Great complete instrument panel and unmolested dashboard.

Engine: Better than average, surprisingly nice for a 45 year old lady. Easy starter, runs well, holds oil pressure well. Pulls strongly through the gears no hesitation, auxiliary cooling fan fitted (Italy). Recent 2015 full carburettor rebuild, new manifold.

Transmission: 3 speed Borg Warner auto (original) performs well through the gears. Smooth performance, no clonks or unusual noises.

Running Gear: All in good order, recent MoT showed few issues all fixed. Drives very well. Five good quality tyres fitted (the original steel and chrome wheels are available if required).

Electrics; Everything works as it should, all lights, switches, rockers, gauges etc operate as they should except the radio aerial is inoperative and rev counter works intermittently.

History: All Italian paperwork available from 2009 to 2015. Jaguar Heritage certificate shows car delivered to Henlys of Bournemouth and first owner in UK. DVLA re-allocated the first cherished number OGL220 which was allocated to the vehicle in the 1970s and will stay with the car.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
