Lot #69841
This 1972 Jaguar XKE is is a Series III roadster that was built on April 12, 1972 before being dispatched to New York, and it was purchased by the seller in June 1984. The car is powered by a numbers-matching 5.3-liter V12 paired with a four-speed manual gearbox and is finished in Light Blue over a blue leather interior. It is equipped with a black soft top, knock-off wire wheels, factory air conditioning, and a Kenwood cassette stereo. Work completed over the course of current ownership has included a repaint in 2021 as well as a partial interior refresh and updates to the ignition, cooling, brakes, and suspension system. Multiple fluid changes were completed and gaskets replaced in preparation for the sale. This Series III Roadster is now offered with a tonneau cover, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, a tool roll, factory literature, service records, assorted spare parts, and a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name.
The Series III E-type was equipped with a larger front grille than earlier models as well as re-positioned and larger front indicators and taillights below the bumpers. The body on this example was refinished in its factory color of Light Blue in 2021 according to the seller, who states that evidence of prior repairs was noted at the right-rear corner of the vehicle. Equipment includes chrome bumpers with overriders, a black soft top, V12 badging, and quad exhaust outlets. A black tonneau cover and top boot are included in the sale.
Chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels wear Dunlop Elite white-stripe tires. The four-wheel independent suspension incorporates torsion bars up front and coil springs out back, and braking is provided by four-wheel discs with the rear rotors mounted inboard. The system has been updated by the seller with flexible stainless-steel lines and remote rear bleeders.
Cabin finishes include replacement blue leather upholstery accompanied by a contrasting black dashboard and interior trim. A Kenwood AM/FM cassette stereo is fitted in the center stack and is linked to an equalizer. Wear and discoloration is noted on the carpets and rear parcel area, and the seller notes that trunk liner has separated from its fasteners as depicted in the gallery below.
Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and centrally mounted gauges for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. An oil temperature gauge has been fitted by the seller. The five-digit odometer shows 46k miles, approximately 12k of which have been added in 38 years of ownership. The seller notes the analog clock is inoperative, and the speedometer needle bounces when the vehicle is driven.
The 5.3-liter V12 is equipped with four Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The seller states the air conditioning and emissions components have been removed, and modifications include a single-wire alternator as well as a solid-state fuel pump, high-torque starter, aluminum radiator, battery cut-off switch, and a REOPUS ignition amplifier circuit board.
Work completed in preparation for the sale included an oil change, a brake fluid flush, gearbox and differential services, and replacement of the following components:
Camshaft cover and intake manifold gaskets
Windshield washer pump
Rear suspension mount and radius arm bushings
Driveshaft U-joints
Exterior lighting seals
Engine-block stamping 7S 6749 SA matches the engine number noted on the chassis identification plate and on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.
Additional photos of the underside are provided in the gallery and exhibit the floors, powertrain, and suspension, as well as corrosion on portions of the exhaust components.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists the factory colors and powertrain numbers and shows delivery to British Leyland in New York.
