"It is in excellent condition with absolutely no rust and with all cavities wax injected. In regular daily use this car is utterly reliable and very pleasing on the eye. The interior trim and hood are new and the paintwork, in signal red, is excellent. All chrome is good. As with any classic car there are one or two idiosyncrasies, the rear lights could be better (slightly pitting) the dash top is not quite a perfect fit and the speedometer reads a little low as a result of the recent fitting of a new 5 speed Broadsport gearbox.
Mechanically the car has covered less than 2000 miles since all the recent refurbishments were completed. The engine has been rebuilt with new bearings, pistons, oil and water pumps and clutch. The rear axle has been rebuilt and the car has been fitted with new bearings bushes and universal joints. The brakes have been fully refurbished with new pistons, seals and kunifer pipework throughout. The steering system has been re-bushed. Both front and rear suspension has been re-built using new bushes and seals.
The previous owner of the car for the past 25 years had the bodywork restored in the late 1990s. Because so much work was needed to the rear inner wings and box sections a decision was taken (not uncommon at the time) to convert the car from Fixed Head Coupe to Roadster. This was done by a specialist company using new Martin Robey panels. Since acquiring the E type just over a year ago I have had the paintwork freshened and the panel fits adjusted so that the car presents really well. I have also fitted new rear springs and re-set the torsion bars to give a correct ride height. The newly fitted gearbox has a 0.76 ratio which provides relaxed cruising and a smoother gear change.
The asking price reflects the fact that this is a very good car. It also reflects the fact that any Jaguar enthusiast checking the chassis number and the Jaguar heritage certificate will know that it has undergone a conversion. Although this means that the value is rather less than that of a production roadster, any owner could be confident that not even an expert eye could detect the change.

This home market original right hand drive Series II 4.2 Roadster has been the subject of what can only be described as a concours standard, nut and bolt restoration, which would be difficult to fault or indeed replicate. Adam Wells of Bude produced the stand-out feature, the exceptional paintwork (in Gunmetal metallic) and also carried out the electrical work

We understand that the bodywork renovation and other work was carried out by WatJag Ltd in the Peak District. The E-Type is equipped with a new five speed Broadspeed T5 gearbox, along with a completely new uprated braking system and a new front and rear suspension. It sits on new Blockley 205x70 VR15 radial ply tyres fitted to new 6.5 x 15 polished stainless steel wire wheels. A new wiring loom has been fitted, together with an electronic ignition distributor and sports coil, and a stainless steel exhaust system. Concealed under the dashboard is a digital electronic radio aerial for the Retro Sound digital radio unit (with SD/USB/AUX-IN). WatJag Ltd also comprehensively rebuilt and upgraded the engine.

The leather upholstery, Wilton carpets, interior trims, dashboard, Moto-Lita wood rimmed steering wheel, mohair hood, hood frame, tonneau cover and brightwork are all new replacements. It is also worth noting that as much attention has been paid to the underside of the Jaguar, which is in superb order.

BAL 530H is supplied with an indoor car cover and a large history folder, detailing the ownership history and the vehicle history, together with MOT test records dating back to 1985 (when the mileage was 11552; the odometer reading is now 17200). Also included is a large quantity of invoices and a detailed breakdown of the engine reconditioning, engine electrics, carburettors and fuel system, braking system, suspension and ancillaries, together with wiring diagrams, a Jaguar lubrication chart, Retro Sound radio instructions, a handbook, the photograph album of restoration, various parts catalogues, a Haynes workshop manual and the V5C registration certificate.

#1R20812 was built on 8th April 1970 as a right-hand drive, Series 2 Fixed Head Coupé finished in Opalescent Gunmetal with a red leather interior, however, as you can see, it’s now a superbly presented 4.2 Roadster in those original colours. It remains matchingnumbers and is accompanied by two files documenting the cars history, importantly including the restoration in the 80s when it was converted from its original Coupé bodywork to a Roadster. While this may unnerve some purists, we see it as a win-win situation as, let’s be honest, values of a converted car are likely to be a little lower than an original Roadster, offering real value for money and additionally, no one would spend all that money on modifying the bodywork and trim without some lovely new paint and, nearly always, a full mechanical refresh at the same time.

It was treated to a second restoration in the early-2000s with, this time, the focus on drivability. The engine was rebuilt by Derbyshire-based WatJag and fitted with a big-valve head, uprated cams, and a Broadspeed 5-speed gearbox, in addition to uprating the brakes and suspension components. More recently, the car had around £14,000 spent on it with Jaguar specialists, Clayton Classics, who refreshed and ‘buttoned up’ the car to ensure everything was up to scratch including the miracle task for a Jaguar of stopping all oil leaks and drips!

Here at Silverstone we have been privileged to sell a number of really early, flat floor, outside bonnet-lock cars for considerable sums of money, but that’s not really what E-Type Roadsters are about. No young man in the sixties would stare at the E-Type poster on his bedroom wall and think ‘I’ll put up with the uncooperative Moss gearbox, the ‘will they, won’t they’ brakes and the chiropractor-funding seating position and, if I don’t change a single grommet, the car will be worth a million quid by the time I’m 93’. No, what everyone desired was a glorious, sexy E-Type in a super colour with red leather and chrome wires, which is exactly what we have here.
