Up for auction is a 1968 Jaguar E-Type Coupe. NOT a 2+2. Original 4.2L and all-gear synchromesh 4-speed manual. All numbers match. 2 Stromberg carbs. 9:1 compression. Dual exhaust.

Runs well with plenty of power and shifts smoothly. Burns clean; does not smoke.

Purchased not-running in 2006. My dad worked on it along with an old certified Jaguar mechanic who lives in town. Since then, it has had a tune-up (points, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condenser), a valve adjustment, a rebuilt radiator, heater hoses, fan belt, rebuilt upper brake master cylinder and system bleed, brake pads, rebuilt clutch hydraulics (master, slave, hoses, some pipes) and system bleed, new thermostat, rebuilt (but not re-bushed--didn't need it) carbs, new oil pan and valve cover gaskets, and rebuilt fuel pump. The wheel bearings were greased. Rear end differential oil was drained and replaced. The fuel tank was also drained and flushed. The freeze plugs were replaced as needed. The vales are set at .006 and .008.

1968 was the only year with gaps in the cam timing chain gears. We believe the car stopped running years ago because it skipped a gear which caused the engine to halt. The timing chain gears were replaced with gapless gears.

This car was used as a vintage racer in the 1970s. There were two concourse badges affixed to the glove box lid, one of which fell off and is dated 1977. I have some old registration and a gas receipt book that Mr. Roberts, the owner, kept from the time. It had a rear windshield wiper and washer bottle installed in the rear window that was removed, which explains the two holes in the rear hatch. There was an air horn installed, which needs to be fixed. Also, a fire extinguisher system was fitted to the interior and engine compartment, with thin metal pipes connecting the canisters and a large red PUSH knob on the dash. I removed the fire extinguisher cans, in case they might combust, but still have them. The electrical shut-off switch, to the left of the driver's footwell was another add-on; it functions properly. It was also fitted with 3-point racing belts.

It has a sticker and a patch sewn on the carpet next to the shifter from E-Jag, the Eastern Jaguar Group. There is also a metal badge next to the rear license plate.

The engine might've been rebuilt at some point since it was a racer. When they opened the motor, it looked very clean and shiny inside.

The car comes with its original speakers in their casing. I removed them so I could work around the interior more easily. There is no radio. I believe the previous owner had it removed and did some rearranging of the rear compartment. Please refer to photos. Has spare tire. The interior is in good condition as pictured. Dash has some tears. Headliner is there, but old.

Dash lights work intermittently. Wipers, head lights, brake lights, and rear lights all work. Some switches on the panel do not work. The rear window defroster and interior dome light do not work.

Has some rust on the driver's floor panel and the lower doors. It also has surface rust in several areas; please refer to photos. There is a new piece of sheet metal installed on the passenger side rocker panel. I don't feel it was abused as a vintage racer and it seems it was taken care of as needed. It has a very straight body and drives straight. I don't think it was ever wrecked. The original color was a maroon red.

Comes with some extra parts including headlight and windshield trim. I do not have bumper guards, front or back.

Will need new tires and front end bushings that I know of.

Clear title in my possession. Car is current on registration. The XKE license plates do not come with the car. Since it was stored by the previous owner for so long, he lost the ownership to the plates and it now has new plates.

There is some rust in the floorpans. It will need front end stabilizer bushings. Will need exhaust flex pipes. Tires hold air but are very old.

Seats are good. Headliner is there but old.

Most of the electrics work, but it needs a few dash switches.

I know its history back to about the late '70s.There are badges on the glovebox lid to denote it participated in the Hillsborough and El Palo Alto concours events, 1978 and '79. The owners before us bought it from Fantasy Junction sometime shortly after this, at which time it had already been painted its gunmetal color. It was originally a burgundy--I believe Regency Red.

When we bought it, the car had been sitting in storage. The last registration sticker on the plate at that time was from 1982. (Please note, the personalized plate does not come with the car, since it is no longer valid.) The car's logbook begins 5/1976 at 00098 miles, and ends 3/1979 at 7650 miles.

It looks to have been raced in the past (pre-1980s), as it had a few additions. There is a fire extinguisher system, an electrical cut-off switch, 4-point seat belts, a rear windshield wiper, and brightwork that was removed but will come with the car. There are also badges from E-Jag, the Eastern Jaguar Group.

1968 Jaguar E-type Coupe. 4.2 L engine with 4 speed manual transmission, all matching numbers. Runs, shifts, and drives well. Engine had good compression (9:1) when last checked. Drives straight. Clear CA title.

This is an early Series 1.5 as shown by the early VIN and other small design details, such as the thinner typeface logo on the engine.

Our family has owned the car since 2006 when it was purchased not running and in the current cosmetic condition. My father was able to get the car running with the help of a local Jaguar mechanic, who went through and refreshed the engine, performed a full tune-up, valve adjustment (6+8), and replaced worn timing gears and freeze plugs as needed. He surmised that it stopped running because, as the only year of E-type with skip-tooth timing gears, they wore out, and he replaced them with Series 1 style gapless gears. There was no valve damage. The engine was clean and shiny inside.

During the time we have owned it, it has been driven occasionally and had maintenance as needed. This includes:

rebuilt radiator

all new hoses

upper and lower fan belts

engine tune-up

rebuilt brake master and servo

brake pads

clutch hydraulics

rebuilt carburetors

oil pan and valve cover gaskets

rebuilt fuel pump

differential oil flushed and replaced

wheel bearings lubed

fuel tank flushed

new Pirelli tires purchased in 2018 and driven on very little

Known issues:

thermostat does not read correctly, will likely need new

All exterior lights, wipers, some dash lights, and heater work. Rear defrost and dome light do not work, as they were disconnected for the now removed rear wiper.

We have some history and documentation on the car up to the late 1970s. The previous owner purchased the car from Fantasy Junction in Emeryville. The car sports various E-type club badges, and concours participant badges from 1977. We were told the previous owner used the car as a vintage racer. It had chrome trim removed, much of which will come with the car. The interior console had been removed and is no longer present. The car was fitted with a fire extinguisher system; we removed the pipes but left the large red button on the dash. It also had a rear windscreen washer and wiper, which explain the cutouts in the rear hatch.

Car comes with its original spare tire, original headlight trim, windshield and rain channel trim, and the radio speaker assembly, but no radio. Also included are its blue and yellow CA vanity plates that read 1968 XKE. The car was sporting these plates when purchased; they are not active.

This 1968 Jaguar XKE is a Series 1.5 coupe that was acquired by the seller as a project in 2006 and was subsequently brought back to running condition. The car is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission, and the body is finished in gray over black upholstery. Features include dual carburetors, a louvered hood, four-wheel disc brakes, knock-off wire wheels, and latch-and-link lap belts. This XKE is now offered as a running project with a parts catalog, a historical maintenance log, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

Series 1.5 XKEs featured exposed headlights to comply with US regulatory requirements while retaining Series 1 details such as the front grille opening, front turn signals, and taillights mounted above the bumpers. This example was previously finished in red and was repainted gray some time ago. An aftermarket right-side mirror has been added, and rear wiper components were removed under current ownership. Corrosion and rust are present around the body, the rubber moldings have deteriorated, and the paintwork is faded, cracked, and peeling throughout.

Chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 195/65 Pirelli P7 tires showing 2010 date codes. The car is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes that feature inboard-mounted rears. Work under current ownership reportedly involved replacing the brake master cylinder, vacuum servo, and brake pads along with lubricating the wheel bearings. The seller notes that the front suspension bushings require replacement.

The cabin houses seats trimmed in black upholstery, a wood shift knob, and latch-and-link lap belts. A battery shut-off switch was installed and a fiberglass cover was added to the driver’s floor under previous ownership, and a button was fitted on the dashboard to activate a fire suppression system that has since been removed. The radio is missing and the rear defroster and dome light are inoperative. The carpets and headliner are worn and there are cracks in the dashboard and steering wheel.

Smiths instrumentation consists of a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer, while supplemental gauges are centrally mounted in the dashboard along with an analog clock. The five-digit odometer shows 10k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six is fitted with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors that were reportedly rebuilt under current ownership. The seller notes that Series I-style timing gears were installed, and the cooling fans have been wired to run continuously while the ignition is on. Additional work since the seller’s acquisition is said to have included rebuilding the radiator and fuel pump, flushing the fuel tank, and replacing the fan belts, engine hoses, oil pan gasket, and valve cover gaskets. The thermostat requires replacement.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The clutch hydraulics were reportedly replaced under current ownership. A leak from the pinion seal is noted. Patches have been added to the exhaust system, and rust is present in the floors and around the jack points.
