Car to be at auction 8/14
www.bonhams.com/auctions/21917/lot/223/

Auction description:
Lot 223
1967 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 1 4.2-LITER ROADSTER
Chassis no. 1E14542
Engine no. 7E11911-9

Without reserve
US$ 130,000 - 160,000
£76,000 - 94,000

According to its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this Series 1 E-Type was completed at the Browns Lane Jaguar works on January 11th, 1967. As one of the final Series 1 production cars built, this car featured the fully synchronized transmission and the 4.2-liter XK engine. The car was built with left hand drive and was painted Opalescent Dark Green, set off by black Connolly hides and a black soft top. The new E-Type was dispatched from the factory on March 24th, 1967, destined for its first owner, a Dr. Joseph A. Starr of Toronto, Canada.

Past its first owner, the early history of this Jaguar is as yet lost to time, but in 2005 its engine was completely rebuilt by Grand Turisimo Jaguar and it appeared for sale in 2006 in Virginia where it was bought by its penultimate owner, a Jaguar restorer out West looking for a good car to restore and use for tours. An extensive restoration was undertaken with receipts documenting all of the parts used--since the restorer was the one working on his own car, he didn't charge himself for labor! In restoring the car, anything that needed fixing was repaired or replaced and the color was changed from its original Opalescent Dark Green to traditional British Racing Green, a shade that matches nicely with its original black interior and top colors. The finished roadster was used on a number of 1000 mile rallies and extensively featured in E-Type 50: Fifty Years of a Design Icon with some 16 pages of stunning photographs showing the car motoring through the desert and juxtaposed against the glitz and lights of Las Vegas.

The present owner acquired the car in 2012 and has used it sparingly during the sunnier months on the East Coast. Since acquisition, over $26,000 in service receipts demonstrate a careful eye for detail and a focus on smooth mechanical operation. A recent service has been conducted to make the new owner's experience as enjoyable as possible.

This beautiful E-Type is offered with an impressive file of receipts, the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, books, tools, jack, and retains its matching numbers engine. There are few more stylish ways to hit the road with the top down than in this great example of the popular Jaguar E-Type.

This 1967 Jaguar XKE is a Series I roadster that was completed on January 11, 1967 and delivered new to Toronto, Ontario via Jaguar Cars of Eastern Canada. A multi-year refurbishment was carried out from 2006 through the early 2010s that included replacement of the floor pans, a repaint in dark green, overhauls of the brakes and suspension, and a rebuild of the 4.2-liter inline-six. Equipment includes a four-speed manual transmission, a black soft top, black leather upholstery, glass headlight covers, four-wheel disc brakes, a Panasonic AM/FM stereo, wood-rimmed steering wheel, and chrome knock-off wire wheels. The car was acquired by the current owner around eight years ago and was featured in the book, E-Type 50: Fifty Years of a Design Icon. This XKE is now being offered on consignment by the selling dealer with receipts beginning in 2006, a Production Record Trace certificate, tool kit, jack, owner’s manual, and a clean Oregon title.

Finished from the factory in Opalescent Dark Green, the car was repainted its current shade of dark green during the refurbishment. Exterior features include a louvered hood, a black soft top and boot cover, and glass headlight covers.

Chrome 15” knock-off wire wheels are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A full-size spare is found in the trunk. The four-wheel disc brakes feature inboard-mounted rears and were overhauled during the refurbishment. The steering rack and suspension components were also replaced at that time, while the left parking brake caliper was repaired in May 2022.

The cabin houses seats trimmed in black leather with a matching dashboard and door panels. Replacement black carpets line the floors, and amenities include a Panasonic AM/FM radio, a height-adjustable rear-view mirror, lap belts, and a padded central arm rest. The seat height has been lowered by approximately 3/4”.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of refurbished Smiths instrumentation that includes a rebuilt 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and a suite of auxiliary gauges in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 26k miles, around 2k of which have been added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter inline-six is equipped with triple SU carburetors and Pertronix electronic ignition. The engine was rebuilt during the refurbishment, and parts receipts provided in the gallery indicate the installation of .030″ over pistons with 9:1 compression. Work performed in May 2022 by The Jag Shop of Portland, Oregon included an oil change, a tune up, and replacement of the tachometer generator and valve cover gaskets.

Engine block stamping 7E11911-9 matches the number shown on the chassis plate and Production Record Trace certificate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission that was fitted with a replacement clutch and resurfaced flywheel during the engine rebuild. The floor pans were replaced by Andre’s Foreign Car Service and Restoration of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Production Record Trace certificate shows the factory colors and identification numbers, along with a completion date of January 11, 1967.

This car was built after the factory transition to open headlights at 1E14532, however build records show this as one of approximately 19 cars that were built and shipped with covered headlights after the transition.
